Commercial Description:
A strong blonde ale of about 8.5% alc. by volume that claims vaguely to be an “abbey” beer, Guldenberg bears no resemblance whatsoever to any Tripel you may have sampled, except in color perhaps. It is very hoppy and malty (though not quite as assertive as De Ranke’s XX Bitter). Made in small batches only on the weekends, they are quickly gaining a reputation as the best specialty beers of Belgium.

Bottle from Take One, Maastricht. Cloudy beer, golden, with a thick fluffy white head that sticks an inch out of the glass. Nose is quite sweet with some graininess. There’s some fresh grassy aroma there too. Mouth is slightly alcoholic, some floral bitterness, apple, orange, sweet biscuity tones all the way through. Quite well lasting on the palate, but still drinkable. Dry bitterness remains well.

750-ml bottle, Marcello’s Lafayette, LA - Aroma: floral, grapefruit, lemon (hop), spicy (hop/yeast), sweet (malt); Appearance: pale-golden color, hazy, off-white head, some laces; Flavor: sweet, salty (malt), bitter (hop), spicy, orange, lemon, hints of honey (yeast); Mouthfeel: medium bodied, creamy texture, high-fizzy carbonation, long-dry finish; Overall: a wonderful beer with strong and balanced hop, malt, and yeast aroma and flavored beer. I can just image how tremendous this beer would be from a keg.

Pours out goldcoloured with big dense off-white head. Aroma is herbal or spicy, with coriander and cinnamon. Also hoppy. Taste is also spicey and hoppy, smooth in mouth, good and long finish with something like honey in it, a soft and smooth sweetness. Nice!
