Commercial Description:
Kriek de Rank is real Belgian sour ale fermented with cherries and then blended with real lambic. It is unfiltered and unpasterized. The de Rank brewery was founded by two good friends; Nino Bacelle & Guido Devose. To them, brewing is a weekend hobby, not an occupation. For a few hours every week they make small batches of what many consider the best specialty beers. Their beers are robust and flavorful. They use the best Hallertau and brewer’s Gold varieties of hops.

Pours deep red with a bit of brown and a full pink head with not much retention. The aroma is very sour and tart with sharp cherries, spritziness, clean spice and sharp 7-Up. Medium thin body that is very crisp with some unobtrusive spritzy carbonation. The taste starts sour with some sharp lemony citrus, light hints of sour cherries and some metallicness that actually works with the style. The finish has a bit of sharp spice with heavy sourness. Nothing overly surprising with the beer, but it was very crisp and highly enjoyable.

An unusual cherry beer, less ale-y than I expected. Tastes more or less like a very smooth old-style lambic, less acidic and no citrus but still nicely sour. Even the aroma is sour. Dull, solid maroon color with pinkish tint. Besides powerful black cherries, flavor includes some berry notes--black and rasp, I think. Not particularly bitter. I’d love to know what doubling the hops would do for this beer...

Great reddish tint. Aroma is full on Belgian cherries, hint of the omnipresent wet blanket. Sour blast, warm cherries on the finish. Nice brew...

(Bottle) Clear red colour with frothy, but brief, pinkish head. Tart, acidic nose with cherries, red-currant and notes of almonds. Huge, tart, fruity taste with distinct cherry notes. Notes of almond in a very complex finish that combines the fresh tart fruitiness of the lambic and the more robust sourish notes of the flemish ale. Medium body, dry. Balanced, complex and lovely beer with a very fresh cherry character.

Bottle (from Bitter Virtue, bottled Jul 04, BB Jul 09). When I lifted the cap there was a little liquid bubbling up through the cork, when I removed this there was an almost perfect combination of oxidised sherry and fruity lambic aromas. The sherry very quickly faded (unfortunately) as it seemed to only be the cork giving off this aroma. Earthy and woody with light fruityness - tart cherries and citrussy acidity. Dry with refreshing acidity in the mouth and a slight saltiness which makes you want just a little more. Very tasty and if the slight sherry flavours could have stayed throughout would have been even better.

Dusty red. Ghosty foam. Cheese, salt and cherry aroma. Restrained sourness. Light saltiness and ghostly cherry flavour.
