Commercial Description:
A fantastic Christmas beer, but one that defies the universal custom of a stronger, spicier beer for the holiday season. At 7% alcohol by volume, this one is relatively lighter in alcohol than the Guldenberg, and does not pack the hop punch of the XX. It combines some of the best elements of those other two beers – with a fine balance of malt and hops, complex character, a refreshing dryness, and a gorgeous cellar aroma – but is distinguished by its festive copper color. The 1999 Père Noël was a bit of a departure, with a very appealing yeasty tartness that was not readily discernible in earlier years.

Had this at BJ’s Winter Ale Fest. Beer poured a murky dark golden color with an average-sized, frothy, off-white, mostly lasting head. Pretty to look at. The aroma was compelling with light malty notes of toasted grain; heavy with bright hoppy notes of lemon, herbs and pine and yeasty with funky notes of barnyard, horseblanket, cellar, moldy cheese and earth. There’s something interesting happening in the hop aromas, too. Somthing that calls to mind the living room the afternoon after a pot party or chewing on a geranium leaf. The flavor was moderately sweet and heavily bitter with a long, heavily bitter finish full of pine retros. The body was light, the texture was watery and the carbonation was lively. The palate served to accentuate the rest of this beer’s characteristics. Quite nice.

Hazy, murky orange body, medium-thick off-white/beige head. Floral, peppery aroma, with light fruits, breads, and crackers. Light sweetness in the body but mostly spicy and bitter, with pepper, light caramels, and bread. Medium-bodied. The bitter, earthy hops component that becomes especially evident in the finish is unique.

750ml bottle poured a cloudy apricot with a small white head. Aromas of pine, light carmel and fruity. Palate was light and smooth. Flavor was fruity, pine and earthy with a smooth bitter finish.

Hazy buff with a solid 3/8" off white head. Very floral aroma with banana and pear. I can’t read the rest of my notes but I remember really liking this one.

Bottled. Mostly lasting off-white head. Excellent lacing. Amber body. Hoppy, herbal aroma with grape, raisin, lychee, a bit of honey and cask-wood. Pleasant and balanced flavors. Starts moderately sweet, finishes moderate to heavy bitter. Delivers lychee, burnt bread and coffee. Quite different from other Belgian Christmas ales. Rather resembles a saison.

Estery yeasty aroma that reminds me of green celery and a chewy, caramel malt undertone with a fruity apricot twist and then a bit of chocolate. What a great aroma. Corked and capped, huge pop and then out it foamed. Exciting! Hazy, murky pumpkin-orange color with a tall white head that thins, but stays thick around the edges. Flavor is chocolaty with vinous caramel and an earthy, spicy, malty, brown sugar complexity. Dry palate, nice and creamy. Thanks to brigadier for sharing.

Excellent lacing with a strong head. Poured caramel brown. The initial aroma contains raisins, ether and other fruits. Extremely complex - the first impression was of chocolate, then toffee and finally caramel unfolding over the span of a couple minutes. I’ll have to pick this one up again next Christmas.
