Commercial Description: This dark ale is brewed with “chocolate” and “crystal” malted barley, giving the beer “roasted” or “coffee-like” notes. While not as full-bodied as our Black Irish Stout, we’re sure you’ll find it to be a pleasantly rich and satisfying ale. Chocolate malt really doesn’t contain any chocolate – malted barley (or “malt”) is often roasted to give it a darker color and to add depth and complexity to the finished product. Crystal and chocolate malt have both been roasted at different time intervals and temperatures by the maltster. Crystal (sometimes called caramel) malt has been roasted for a relatively short period of time and is measured in varying degrees of reddish hues; chocolate malt has been roasted considerably longer and has a dark brown, or chocolate appearance. Along with “base” (unroasted) malt, specialty malts like crystal and chocolate give us the great flavor, color and mouthfeel associated with dark ales like this one.
