Commercial Description:
This is Deans Brothers Brewing Co.'s flagship brew. The history of this beer began in 1980 when Bill Deans, at the age of 18, moved to England for a year with his English girlfriend, Philippa Jane, and discovered English Ales & the Pub scene. This recipe hasn't changed in over 25 years. This is still the beer that Bill fell in love with in 1980 and drinks everyday. The only difference is that now he shares it with others!

On cask at the Daily Pint. Pours a hazed golden amber, honey color with a foamy off-white head. Aroma of hay, caramel, bread, honey, papaya, and cereal. Taste is pretty sweet bready malts with hone and a light but noticeable fruitiness. Good for your run of the mill ESB. Mouthfeel is your typical smooth cask conditioned.

Decent ESB - I have to admit I was a good way through the LA Beer Fest before I got to this one. I remember it being bitter and malty, but not exceptionally complex - more on the smooth side. Very drinkable, especailly for a style that I’m never really smitten with.

CASK at the Daily Pint. A shame about the tap scores, but this is quite unique on hand pump. Looks a creamy brown - as good as an ESB can look I imagine. Initial flavors of apple, hop and cream. Evolves into a hearty malt character - barley, bread, bitter. Heavier than I thought the style could be.

I am glad I didn’t have to add this one. Aromas of butterscotch - strong and over the top. Some off stale flavors too. Flavor is straight nasty. Gross bitterness, harsh. Dreadful butterscotch flavors. Hazy orange with no head. Pretty much undrinkable.

On tap poured a clear amber with a small lingering amber head. Aromas of carmel, earthiness and light butterscotch. Palate was medium bodied and smooth. Flavors of carmel, earthiness and light citrus with a smooth lightly bitter finish.

22 oz. bottle - thanks to riversideak for sharing; we all certainly had a chuckle over this brew; clear, glowing orange; aromas of raw grain, lemons and a touch of cheese? very stale, thin body; taste like butter; kind of harsh

This Brew courtesy of riversideAK. Wow, this is their flagship brew. Ouch. Pours copper with a bit of haze and almost no head. The aroma is mostly butter mixed with a light amount of orange hard candy and a bit of stale malts. The taste is an odd combination of sweet citrus hard candy and a cup of butter, a bit of bread and just a smidgen of pine hops.

Sampled 9/13/08. This ESB pours a medium amber color from a 22oz bottle. Medium to small sized white foamy head, with nice retention. The aroma is caramel malt, buttery, ice tea and some floral hops. A medium bodied ESB. The malts are caramel, ice tea, and sweet. The hops are floral. OK I realize that this is supposed to be an English style ESB, but the Maris Otter malts and the East Kent Golding & English Fuggles hops are way over the top. It’s not quite buttery enough to put on your popcorn but its kind of close. The balance is good, and the carbonation levels are fairly lively. It is a decent interpretation of the style; it’s just not quite my cup of tea. Mouthfeel is full. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly sweet.
