jerc (3114), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Jun 3, 2008 2008-05-30. Black, good sized creamy brown head with light lacing. Very roasty aroma, lightly acidic, muted mocha, coffee and chocolate touches. (7+) Flavour has a healthy roast alternating between bitter and a sweeter side. All over the above reaches a brief moment of cohesive perfection along the finish before parting their separate ways again. Smooth average to medium bodied palate is more carbonated than most stouts, to its benefit in my opinion. It grew on me a whole lot as the glass went on and my tongue become used to the roast, allowing the nuances of the malt to show more. Really very nice, and gains a point or two for being unexpected. mabel (1633), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Aug 8, 2008 [1407-20080530] Bottle. Woody chocolate milk mocha aroma with roasty malt notes. Dark black brown body with a long-lasting bubbly dark brown body. Wooden plank milk chocolate slabs, sweet ash and a bit of booze in the flavour. Full body. Quite nice blend.
(5T @ Mondial; Montreal, QC) mcferc4 (32), Essex Fells, New Jersey, USA May 29, 2008 Poured pitch black (no light passed through), with a solid head from a 750 ml bottle at the brewery. Solid aroma, full of roast. They billed it as "smoky," and there was definitely a lot of smoke going on in both aroma and taste. I’d almost call it more of Dark Imperial Rauch than an Imperial Stout, at least at first. When it warmed up, it felt a lot less thin and the flavors started popping up more clearly. Dark fruits and chocolate, not much coffee. Smooth finish, alcohol wasn’t prevalent at all. A solid brew -- the only thing that it was really lacking was serious body. Went down like a weaker porter at first. Definitely be sure to serve at cellar temp (if taken from the fridge, let it sit for 15 minutes or so), or have them pour it while you drink another brew at the brewery so it can warm up. Sammy (3041), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Jun 1, 2008 Good sample from bottle enjoyed at mondial 2008. Very coffee and great stuff. Very tasty, creamy mouthfeel. notalush (2027), Rawn-kawn-kohma, New York, USA May 15, 2008 Sampled at Dickinsonbeer’s Hoboken gathering - inky black pour, with a serious tan head - mildly tannic/tart aroma, with gentle vanilla sweetness and espresso bitterness - soft carbonation in the mouth - roasty, almost to the point of being ashy, but vanilla sweetness and a hint of smoke balance things out to keep that quality from becoming overpowering - quite nice.
