Watch out for the cork, mine hit the celling and came back fast. Great beer, but for the price I’d rather have two Unibroue’s VA Homebrewer (525), Portsmouth, Virginia, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Dec 23, 2001 This seems a bit confused. It has the color of brandy and has some notes of brandy in the flavor and, to a lesser extent, the nose. Very malty with caramel, excessive toffee and alcohol apparent. This beer has an underlying spicy bitterness that doesn’t seem to match with the overwhelming malt character. Good, but not great. BeerLimey (1873), California, USA

Aroma is malty with caramel, sweet banana and pear candy, and licorice spice. Pretty hoppy palate for a Belgian ale offering some citric bitterness as well as a marked alcohol presence. Well spiced with woody notes towards the end. Shows mild chocolaty undertones in the aftertaste. chronictonic (403), Wyndmoor, Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Dec 27, 2003 More hops than most of the other Belgian winter beers I've tried this year. Had this on tap. Medium to dark brown in color with a good rocky head in the glass. Aroma is rich and spicy - slightly clovelike with a dried dark fruit hint - raisins or maybe currents. Flavor is big. Huge malt presence, along with the blend of fruits, sugars and spicieness. Finishes with a nice hop bite - which is sorely needed to help balance out the body. This beer packs a wallop too - 3 of these and I was ready for bed! f351c4v (408), Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, USA

Aroma is very sweet, some cloves and spiciness. Fruitiness and candi sugar dominates the palate. Quite sticky as it goes down, with a slight burn. A seasonal favorite. pivo (2537), Germany

| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Dec 25, 2007 March 2006 bottle. Vinous, ripened fruit aroma. Dark amber color with a orange-beige head that did not stay, though it laced lightly while departing. Medium in body with very smooth carbonation. The flavor is something of overripe plum accompanied by sweet malt and mild spice. Heat is noticeable on the way to the finish, and it ends a bit dryish with arguably floral hop. It’s very sippable. Might be a counterpart to an American barleywine.
