BeerHawk (1175), Huntsville, Alabama, USA Nov 1, 2009 Bottle. Poured black with a tan head. Aromas of chocolate, rye, and hints of roast. The flavor found dark chocolate with a faint backing of rye. Light body and a faint malt aftertaste. kramer (2407), Sunbury, Pennsylvania, USA Oct 28, 2009 12 oz bottle. Pours a clear black body with a large frothy light brown head that lasted forever. The nose is mostly roasty, but there’s a light rye bread accent. Some coffee and burnt notes. The flavor is clearly infected though, rancid and acrid burnt malt with a heavy sour twang on the back end. The earthy rye flavor plays up the sour even heavier. Thin and overly fizzy from the infection with a lingering burnt finish. This was actually almost drinkable, in the way that the Captain Lawrence SFTO series was, but it’s even more obvious that this wasn’t intentional. SynergyXJ (506), Blacksburg, Virginia, USA Jul 31, 2009 Bottle, #490. Black pour with real big creamy head. Roasted malt, chocolate and rye aroma. Mainly roasted malt flavor. Decent brew. lithy (1600), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA Jul 18, 2009 Light brown, smooth tan head. Aroma is chocolate, caramel, light rye and roast. Taste is chocolate, coffee, light roast again which is covered by a peppery rye finish. CaptainCougar (5379), Rockville, Maryland, USA Jun 14, 2009 Bottle sampled at Noog Four-0 5/31/08: Pours a barely transparent dark mahogany with a spotty-lacing light tan head. Aroma of fresh, dry grainy rye and malt with a touch of roasted malt. Body starts semi-sweet grainy and roasty before a thinner drier bittersweet finish with some lingering dark chocolate and rye. An interesting brew. Sparky27 (1559), Phoenix, Arizona, USA Mar 21, 2009 Bottle courtesy of dkachur – thanks Dan! Pours dark reddish brown with a one finger tan head. The nose is light roast and cocoa. The taste is faint chocolate, light roasted malt and mild coffee. Medium bodied. Reminds me more of a Schwarzbier. dkachur (2318), Charlottesville, Virginia, USA Mar 7, 2009 Sampled at the brewery. Pours nearly black with a medium head. Good head retention and lacing. Aroma of roasted malts, caramel and smoke. Taste of roasted malts, coffee and a bitter finish. Medium bodied. nick76 (2634), Tampa, Florida, USA Feb 7, 2009 The aroma fits the style pretty good but it has some metallic and smokey elements that go over the top for me. The toastiness is there as is coffee but still it’s not good enough for me. The appearance is nice with an average head and deep dark brown color. The flavor is like the aroma. The palate is OK but too thin for me. Overall a drinkable stout that is somewhat dry.
