Malt, toast, coffee, slightly bitter aftertaste for the flavor. Nice dark brown color. Coffee, toast aroma. Recommended to try once. cking (1041), North Canton, Ohio, USA
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Dec 17, 2009 A fairly light stout with some decent qualities. Hearty dark color with a spritzy head and little to no lacing. English malt aroma with some burnt and nutty aspects. Fizzy and lighter in body, balanced and easy going. Roasted malt taste with a good helping of crystal malt along with a noble hop presence. GG (1670), NorCal, California, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 2/5 | 14/20 | Nov 26, 2009 A big thanks to Louis for allowing me to scratch off one of my hard to find states (Tennessee). So that’s a plus, and it’s really damn good to boot so definitely a win-win. The beer pours out a dark purple-ish/black body, mahogany edges and creamy amber head. Aroma is nicely roasty, the rye shows up well, some light smoke. It does miss some of the chocolate I like to see in my stouts though. First sip of the beer and I knew I’d enjoy it. Rather bittersweet peppery chocolate jumps out first, light astringency, roasted malts about mid-palate with lingering bitter coffee-like finish. The palate was a little on the thinner side of things, but it didn’t detract from the enjoyment of the beer. Solid. theisti (1689), Leawood, Kansas, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Nov 13, 2009 12 oz bottle sent to me by Suttree. Pour is a murky dark brown with patches of ruby burgundy, topped with a three inch khaki head. The head is somewhat loose, noisy, but lasting. As it eventually breaks down, some nice lacing is left behind. Aroma is light roasted / smoked grain, with a bit of very faint vanilla sweetness on top of that (this faded to nothing as it warmed). As it opens up, there is a nice natural leafy tobacco odor. Taste is the leafy roast right up front, followed by a cherry fruit sweetness that is very mild, but present (as with the sweetness in the nose, this faded to nothing after warming). The middle and finish return to the grainy Rye, wood and leafy tobacco of the nose. The finish is quite mouth drying. Palate is on the light side of medium, with overactive carbonation. This was a really interesting and quaff-able beer - thanks Phil! BeerHawk (1175), Huntsville, Alabama, USA

The flavor found dark chocolate with a faint backing of rye. Light body and a faint malt aftertaste. kramer (2510), Sunbury, Pennsylvania, USA
| 1.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 1/10 | 2/5 | 6/20 | Oct 28, 2009 12 oz bottle. Pours a clear black body with a large frothy light brown head that lasted forever. The nose is mostly roasty, but there’s a light rye bread accent. Some coffee and burnt notes. The flavor is clearly infected though, rancid and acrid burnt malt with a heavy sour twang on the back end. The earthy rye flavor plays up the sour even heavier. Thin and overly fizzy from the infection with a lingering burnt finish. This was actually almost drinkable, in the way that the Captain Lawrence SFTO series was, but it’s even more obvious that this wasn’t intentional. SynergyXJ (506), Blacksburg, Virginia, USA
