There is something about the yeast and hops that Deschutes uses that I love. The yeast provides a bit of iced tea and banana hints. Compared to the IPA and PA, this beer has more of the hops --- a mix it appears of the English and Cascade hops, and as a consequence has a longer mouthfeel and aftertaste. Very nice; though it is a slow and serious beer rather than a slammer. pinkzambia (989), Boise, Idaho, USA

| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 5/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Aug 14, 2005 Very earthy in the nose, almost mushroom-like, with good ale yeast fruit and good malt. Amber in color with a head that pours very fat but recedes quickly then stays around. Big, long bitterness within an equally big malt that is mostly nondescript except for malt sugar and some bubblegum-like flavor. there is a subtle, distracting, untasty vegetal flavor that enters into the slightly sweet finish. mjg74 (2000), La Mesa, California, USA

Flavor is somewhat hoppy, but not super hoppy. A little bit of spice and malts. pobenohne (504), Northern Liberties, Pennsylvania, USA

| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Aug 6, 2005 Nice all-around ESB. I used to like Redhook, but this taste a little more crisp and fresh. Not overpowering or stale like Fuller. Frothy head, nice lacing. Each one tastes better than the last. fuzzywasabeer (28), boise, Idaho, USA

| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Apr 15, 2005 Bottle. Amber color with a rich head, producing a nice lace throughout the glass. Mellow hops and taosty malts dominate the nose. The first tatse lets me know I’m drinking a world class ESB. Silky smooth on the sweet side with bisciuty malts, and roasted grains. An awesdome use of the hops makes this my favorite ESB. Just freakin fantastic.
