Pretty nice nose, lots of rich caramel and sweet dark malts just exploding in the air. Lots of toffee and dark fruits as well. The flavor was pretty thick and creamy as well. Really full on the palate. Lots of caramel and roasty malt mixed in there. Toffee and some molasses are noticeable, with some dark fruit character as well. Really nice, well done porter. Usually I think of Porters as beers that weren’t quite good enough to be a stout, but this one reminds me what a porter can be. There is cocoa and tobacco. Charcoal taste. Vey light bourbon, which means the bourbon hasn’t ruined a good beer, and instead compliments it. Some oak. Thick and heavy palate. Fairly bitter. Thanks Skyview. | 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 5/5 | 15/20 | Jul 17, 2008 Another one of the little bottles from Deschutes, this time a promising dark brew: the Black Butte Porter (no 2nd grade jokes please.) It looks as it sounds - very dark black body and a fuzzy darktan head, with an aroma in tribute to Guiness, alongside the smell of the non-sweet bits of raisins, hickory wood and a shot of Coca-Cola. Simple, yes, but straightforward and inviting. The taste has a comfortable mouth feel, both light and slaking, but doesn’t feel unnatural, even in the setting of a dark beer. The flavor is mild, with meaty smoke and raisin prominent again, and a little brown sugar, perhaps replacing the aroma’s Coca-Cola, as the sweeter half. Mostly I’m in awe at how "light" this beer feels, but how the flavors are typically associated with the deeper, darker end of the pool. This for me makes a good casual drink with dark flavors in a light container. A winner from Deschutes! tuohyam (14), Enumclaw, Washington, USA

Pours a nice translucent dark brown with ruby hues. Aroma of obvious nice dark roast with some slight band-aid. Flavor has a nice dark roast with some almost off-flavor medicinal notes. Palate is medium body with medium carbonation....I was hoping this would be a better beer, butt none the less, it is good. daknole (3031), Scottsdale, Arizona, USA

Smells of creamy matls, chocolate and maybe some caramel. Flavor is very creamy, toasty and some chocolate. Creamy as hell and delicious. TikiE (360), Sylva, North Carolina, USA
