Very noticable tones of chocolate and coffee...roasted to say the least...some hop balance in the finish, but overall...sort of sweet and syrupy... vulcanmeister (102), La Grande, Oregon, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | May 31, 2008 I love this stuff! One of my first forays into the world of "dark beers" after the unschooled years of light lagers. This beer pours dark brown with a creamy white head. Bouquet of caramel, nuts, and coffee.
Lovely roasted malt flavor with a nice balance of hops. Long sweet finish, chocolaty and a whisper of vanilla. Marvelous! Those guys in Bend really know what they’re doing! elihapa (1052), Honolulu, California, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | May 25, 2008 bottle. Pours a dark brown with a small cream head. Smells of cocoa, wood, and roasts. Palate is smooth and medium bodied. Flavor is very similar to their Obsidian Stout: dark chocolate, cocoa, intense roasted flavor, and chalk. Finish is pretty dry. Good blend, if you ask me. Well made overall, I think I prefer Deschutes’ Obsidian stout slightly for its more intense flavors.) 3.7 gbdub (73), Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | May 24, 2008 Pours a very deep but translucent brown, thick cream-brown head that laces nicely. Seems quite fizzy. Roast malt with a sweetish hint of chocolate in the aroma. Some piney/citrusy notes as well. Medium body with somewhat sweet roasted coffee flavor, with a touch of the citrusy hoppiness near the end. Also some real smokiness that lingers. Pretty tasty. ansermadide (513), Kyle, Texas, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | May 24, 2008 Amber/black color. No light traveling throug these colors. Smells of roasted malt. Not as watery as expected. Pretty darned good. Gypsy19 (636), California, USA
| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | May 22, 2008 A decent porter that is exactly as described: Malty, chocolatey, somewhat nutty. A little bitter toward the end. This is a very drinkable beer, but doesn’t really compare to Deschutes Obsidian, which is it’s bigger, stronger, bolder stout brother.
