Severely disappointed. Looked and tasted like a cola. Too thin for my liking with no head. Chocolate was too lite in both aroma and taste. Deschutes is a great brewery so I hold their releases to a high standard. They can do better than this.

12 oz bottle at New Otani Hotel, watching sunset on Waikiki beach. Pours a very dark mahogany with a think, sandy brown head. Aroma is all chocolate and pacific northwest hops. Taste is same, really good and full-bodied. The malts are really roasted dark giving caramel, dark roasted coffee and other burnt grain flavors. Really glad to find this beer as I’ve never seen it on the east coast before.

Courtesy of Dragonstout. Pours a dark brown with slight tan head. Has aroma of roasted malts. Tastes of chocolate, burnt grain, licorice, and earth. Palate is a medium consistency with a thin clean finish.

Bottled. BB 04/26/08 1200K. Beer is very dark ash brown, nearly opaque. Head is large, off-white, frothy. Quickly diminishing but mostly lasting. EKG of lacing hovering above the watermark.
Malt quality is rich. Moderate notes of roasted grain, chocolate, lighter notes of toasted bread crust, cafe au lait; Hoppy with light/moderate notes of resin/pine, savory herb; Yeasty with a light note of dough; Light woody/cedar note,
The flavor is moderately/heavily bitter, moderately acidic, lightly sweet with a long, lightly acidic, lightly bitter finish. Slightly smoky woody finish.
The body is medium, the texture is watery and the carbonation is average/lively.
Safe and solid.

Bottle as part of the homebrew trade. Black, nice very light tan head. Nose is somewhat acidic cocoa, toffee, some coffee, sweet malt. Flavor is acidic coffee, milk, roasty malt. Bittersweet finish lingers & a hint of dark fruit comes through.

Bottle. Pours deep, nearly opaque brown with wispy beige head. Aroma is roasted grain, dark chocolate and nuttiness. Flavor is toastiness with a light touch of smoke, spice, hints of bitterness and sour cherry fruitiness. Palate is lively, creamy, a bit on the the thin side - but I actually thought this made it nice for a session. Really good.

Pours a dark brown with thin tan creamy head. Wonderful sweet malty aroma. Malty roasty taste with a little bit of caramel and chocolate, slightly bitter finish. A little thin bodied, very drinkable. An everyday winter drinker for me.
