Pours deep brown, black in the glass, with a medium tan head, fine lasting lacing. Smells of chocolate, espresso, apple, molasses, hay and pine. Medium-thin body, velvety smooth, with some crispness. Tastes of dark chocolate, raspberry, citrus, and pine. Slightly mineral flavor, which compliments the malts. Well balanced.

Many a tasting, this beer pours a nice almost black with a red tint. The head is thin but a nice sticky tan. Aroma is roasted coffee, chocolate, and a little hop kick. Flavor is much the same but fairly intense. This beer was my first love, and is always very drinkable even on a 90+ degree day.

12oz bottle. Pours a mostly black body with a reddish brown hue around the edges. Thin, tan, foamy head that dissipates quickly leaving a good amount of thick, layered lacing. Aroma is sweet with some rich chocolates, light roasts and coffees, and a nice fruity citrus. Similar to the stout, but a little muted and fruitier. Flavor is sweet with lots of initial caramels and chocolate. Moves into a fruity citrus, light roasted middle with more sweet chocolate. Finishes with a citrusy, rich, chocolate roast that lingers for a moderate amount of time with lots of caramel. Palate is medium bodied and semi-dry. Overall, a nice, well balanced porter. A muted version of the obsidian stout, but still maintained a sweet, chocolate-roast taste.

Wow. Dark pour. Hint of blackberry sweetness. More sweet than most porters. Very good. Very drinkable.

Update from Nov 08 on the monorail from New York New York to the Luxor and out of a plastic cup that I spilt everywhere. Drunken scribbled notes mirror the original ones with the addition of a bit of fake raspberry. I finished the review while stumbling into the parking complex in the Luxor and bumping into walls as I used my cup as a writing surface...

Poured out a huge brown rocky head that dropped down to a small crown but can be brought back by a good vigorous swirl. Very very dark brown with a slight reddish hue. Aroma is very prominent as is the style. Biscuity, not quite burnt, coffee, chocolate and plums in that order with smoke thoughout. As the tasting lags on, the coffee really stands out. Taste is really good and even better when closing in on room temperature. Creamy chocolate, coffee, can’t nail down any obvious hop flavour but the bitterness does not hide. Slight sourness - I wish I knew what this was from. I do not really notice any fruit flavour here - that could be from the fact that I do not drink coffee and the fact that that flavour really sticks out for me. Dark roasted biscuity malts. I am very glad that the hos are not even near dominating this beer - well done. Mouthfeel is nearing full but nowhere syrupy. Low carbonation. Some middle bitterness. Well rounded beer that finishes with a roasted malt aftertaste that seems to linger forever. I gotta say that I pretty much slammed this back - so easy to drink and quite smooth - no flaws but nothing here cries out excellent - it’s just solid. I’m very pissed off that I do not have a Paddock Wood ready to compare to this. Only memories and basically I’m retarded so good luck with that, stupid.

12oz bottle from Fox and Hound in Lone Treee, CO. Pours dark brown with tan head. Aroma is roasted malt and chocolate. Flavor is chocolate and roasted malts. Smooth and creamy mouthfeel. Easy on palate and cannot wait to try Black Butte XX.
