Commercial Description:
XX. It usually means bigger. Richer. And we can think of no better way to describe the taste of this even-bolder take on our classic, Black Butte Porter. Black Butte XX is an imperial porter with a lot more malt and hops, a wealth of coffee, cocoa nibs and aged in bourbon oak barrels. XX. It also means 20. Enjoy one during our 20th anniversary. On the flavor scale - It’s legendary.

Draft. pours a black color with a light tan head. Deep, chocolate aromas and coffee and alcohol notes. Dark fruits and vanilla flavors but I found the beer to be very hot and malt astringent overall. By the looks of the ratings before me, maybe I’m off base here. I’ll try to find a bottle to re-rate soon.

Bottle pours black with a light brown thin head. Aroma is sweet, roasted almonds, black licorice, and roasted malts. Tons of flavor to this one. Dark roasted malts with a vanilla sweetness, coffee, with noticeable hints of bourbon and oak and a slightly bitter chocolate finish. Coats the mouth with goodness.

Pours black, but brown around the edges with a tan head that retains pretty well. Smell of anise, roast, vanilla, ash, and the smell of green wood on a still living tree. Same thing with the living wood in the taste, as well as cocoa, vanilla, caramel, charcoal, and some roastiness. Thicker than medium body and light carbonation; quite smooth. Pretty tasty, though I don’t know that I’d worry about getting more of this.

Bottle. Aroma of roasted malt, smoke, wood, dry wood and green wood, a hint of dark fruits. Some caramelized vegetables as well. Flavor again has the dry, but still somehow lively, wood with the sweeter caramel and malty aspects blending in. Interesting and tasty beer.

22 oz bottle. Pours a clear dark brown body with a one finger fizzy dark brown head. Some decent retention for being so thin looking. The nose has loads of coffee. Cocoa, roast, light vanilla, wood, and maybe a bit of bourbon. Very thick and hearty smelling. The flavor is dry and roasty up front with lots of cocoa powder. A slight astringent bite going on. Fades to a very lightly bourbon laced finish with touches of oak. Mouthfeel is pretty full and thick with moderate fizzy prickly carbonation. Much sweeter on the lingering finish. Overall, this was alright, but not one that blew me away at all.

This poured black in color with a moderate brown head of fine bubbles that fades away. When sniffing this immediately reminded me of toffee dipped in chocolate with nuts. This was followed by dark fruit, woodsmoke, mild bourbon, asparagus and a peppery spice. In the mouth it was medium to bull-bodied with concentrated flavor and a rich midpalate balanced by the carbonation. Overall, this has nice sweetness, dominated by toffee in both the nose and mouth, to it and good complexity. This appears as it it will age well for 6 - 12 months but beyond that the sweetness may overpower.
