Commercial Description:
XX - 20th Anniversary, released 2008
XXI - 21st Anniversary, released 2009

This masterpiece is a tribute to Black Butte Porter, the revolutionary Deschutes Brewery beer that has excited beer enthusiasts since 1988. This special Reserve Series release is a colossal version of Black Butte Porter. Our brewers enhanced Black Butte XXI by adding some Theo’s Chocolate cocoa nibs from Seattle, dry-hopping it with 100 pounds of Bellatazza’s locally roasted coffee, and then aging a portion of it in Stranahan’s Colorado whiskey barrels. These regional partners provided quality artisan ingredients that give this commemorative beer a truly handcrafted complexity.
Released as Black Butte XX in 2008 to celebrate our 20th Anniversary.

10/30/2008: Black Butte XX is a dark, opaque semi-chocoalte color with a foamy, tan head and nice lacing. Smooth belgian chocolate, hint of roast/coffee, and light vanilla a combine to form a really nice aroma. The flavor has chocolate and cocoa, hints of coffee, vanilla, and then a nice wham of bourbon. There is also a lingering flavor of coffee and cream. This beer is medium-full, really smooth, and coats the palate well. The bourbon really opens up more when it warms. This is a very nicely crafted barrel-aged beer. It is definitely a big improvement over the regular Black Butte Porter!

Bottle thanks to bu11zeye. Tiny light brown head atop a black thick body. Nose and Taste: dirt, chocolate and fudge. Just a black bomb that is really good.

22 ounce bottle shared by cdumler. Thanks! Pours a very dark brown color that appears black in the glass. Large tan head with good head retention and lacing. Aroma has notes of toffee, chocolate, coffee, leather, vanilla and roasted malts. Taste is toffee, bitter hops, vanilla, coffee and chocolate. Full bodied.

Bottle, 11% at LCRBM08. Vinous aroma, sweet yeast. Black colour, very small brown head. Good flavour, bready, roasted, vanilla, vinous. Very good combination. The alcohol is a bit rough, but all in all very nice.

Bottled at SBWF08. Pours out in a opaque black colour with arich and firm pale brown head. Rich aroma of dark chocolate, burnt malts, nuts, wood, ash, vanilla nd figs. Full-bodied with notes of cocoa, black chocolate, wood, nuts, brown sugar and all-spice. Rather creamy palate but the alcohol shines through here and there. Long warming finish of dark chocolate, wood, vanilla and anise.

[1705-20080912] 1pt6floz bottle. Dark roasted malt and smoked wood-barrel aroma. Black body with a medium-lasting creamy dark brown head. Bitter roast coffee flavour has a mild whiskey finish and mild vanilla hints throughout. Full body is boozy. Very nice, great quality, sweet and enjoyable.

Head gone in less than 1 second, over ink-black beer. Ink, c-hops at large, meat-gravy smell, soy sauce. Nearly bitter hops overlay, but still, the sweet-alcoholic character dominates. Black fruits in the finish, some cardemoms and pepper. Very thick, syrupy and viscous. Ah. This one is difficult, as it starts nearly lame, but gradually complexity builds up, layered as an onion. This is actually quite good and complex.
