Commercial Description:
XX - 20th Anniversary, released 2008
XXI - 21st Anniversary, released 2009

This masterpiece is a tribute to Black Butte Porter, the revolutionary Deschutes Brewery beer that has excited beer enthusiasts since 1988. This special Reserve Series release is a colossal version of Black Butte Porter. Our brewers enhanced Black Butte XXI by adding some Theo’s Chocolate cocoa nibs from Seattle, dry-hopping it with 100 pounds of Bellatazza’s locally roasted coffee, and then aging a portion of it in Stranahan’s Colorado whiskey barrels. These regional partners provided quality artisan ingredients that give this commemorative beer a truly handcrafted complexity.
Released as Black Butte XX in 2008 to celebrate our 20th Anniversary.

22 oz. Pours opaque deep brown. Looks like espresso and tastes like espresso, with molasses, oak and bourbon. Heavy, slick body with a bourbon finish that burns (in a good way).

Pours black with a creamy brown head, Pleasant chocolate, vanilla, leather, caramel aroma. Big smooth body. Flavors of coffee, cocoa and vanilla. Has a nice acrid edge. Relatively low but lingering bitterness and mellow hop flavor. Quite good overall but a touch disjointed.

Bottle from Nugget in Vacaville, CA. Poured a dark brown almost black color. Smelled of coffee and chocolate. The chocolate flavor hits you first followed by the strong taste of coffee. The only negative aspect of this beer is that the flavor fell apart and the alcohol started to show as it warmed. Overall, very impressive.

22 oz. bottle, courtesy of golubj. Dark black pour with a thin, light brown head. Aroma of licorice and roasted malt. Very complex flavor. Initial chocolate hint gives way to roasted notes. Finish is slighty boozy and bitter. Tasty treat.

Pours tall tan head. Medium to large sized bubbles, but they don’t break down very fast. Wonderful porter aroma with a blend of coffee and bourbon in the aroma. Flavor is absolutely heavenly. Wonderful bourbon wood tones which intertwine with the coffee. Not really catching the cocoa nibs, but also not really missing it either. Nice warming on the palllate with bourbon aftertaste. A shame this is a limited edition. Also a shame that its $10/22oz. bottle, or I’d be stocking some of this in the basement to see how it mellows over time. If you can find it...GET IT!! If you can’t and want to trade for something equally unique from your neck of the woods hit me up!

A Mes rate: bottle at Beer Exposed.
Big thanks to Phil for popping this one open. Expected black viscous body with a good tan head. Quality. The faint chocolate and dark goodies in the aroma are much too hidden by a strong vegetal character. Definite cauliflower (thanks dunkpigen). The flavour is certainly better. Full on neat cocoa powder and black coffee. The bourbon is barely detectable. Sweet but dry finish. Sadly the vegetable notes are still there. Rather boring overall. I certainly preferred the Obsidian.

Pours a very dark brown, damn near black in color. Smell is mostly dark roasted malts and some molasses. Taste is more of the roasted malts with a bit of the molasses. Very nice and very dark. Can’t get over the molasses and dark malt smell. This is a very well done beer. Decent and pretty well done, but not upper tier.
