Commercial Description:
XX - 20th Anniversary, released 2008
XXI - 21st Anniversary, released 2009

This masterpiece is a tribute to Black Butte Porter, the revolutionary Deschutes Brewery beer that has excited beer enthusiasts since 1988. This special Reserve Series release is a colossal version of Black Butte Porter. Our brewers enhanced Black Butte XXI by adding some Theo’s Chocolate cocoa nibs from Seattle, dry-hopping it with 100 pounds of Bellatazza’s locally roasted coffee, and then aging a portion of it in Stranahan’s Colorado whiskey barrels. These regional partners provided quality artisan ingredients that give this commemorative beer a truly handcrafted complexity.
Released as Black Butte XX in 2008 to celebrate our 20th Anniversary.

Sweet chocolate and bittersweet aftertaste. The bourbon barrel flavor is apparent in the aftertaste. Sweet malty flavor with strong coffee and chocolate flavor. A slight earthy vegetable taste that is hard to identify. Balanced but very complex. Almost a new flavor with every sip. Very nice!!

Bottle. Black pour. Aroma is licorice / molasses, roasted chocolate malt, some sweeter chocolate and some alcohol / bourbon. Flavor is the same, sweet, malty, chocolatey, roasted, licorice / molasses, and a good amount of woody bourbon flavor. Pretty complicated beer.

[thank you, Phil_L]
Pours deep brown with a small, creamy, beige head. Aroma has dry cocoa, coffee powder, roasted malts, vanilla and chocolate. But also a very heavy cauliflower vegetable note. Fine creamy and lightly grainy mouthfeel. Flavour start off with the water from boiled cauliflower, then turns vinious and dry and quite roasted. Completely unbalanced beer.

(Bottle, Stockholm Beer Festival, 20 Sep 2008) Black colour with brief, beige head. Malty, roasted nose with notes of chocolate, coffee and liquorice. Malty, roasted taste with dark chocolate, cocoa, black coffee and dark rye bread. Full body, smooth mouthfeel. Fairly bitter with balanced sweetness. Stunning balance with alcohol very well hidden. Lovely beer!

Smells boozy, with some creamy coffee, caramel, strawberries, and liquorish. Pours a dark creamy brown, caramel colored head. Smooth chocolate flavor upfront, sharp roasty alcohol sharpness follows, whiskey, berries, and more coffee. The palate is a bit unbalanced at first but then blends together nicely for a great aftertaste.

Bottle: Poured a dark brown/black...nose had massive amounts of chocolate, vanilla, coffee, brown sugar as well as the oak/bourbon. In fact, I don’t think anything about this brew is subtle...the mouth feel is medium-full and lingers for a bit. The taste on this is just ridiculous...an explosion of vanilla-oak-bourbon hits immediately giving way to the chocolate and coffee. A very subtle hoppy finish is noted...though ass-bag-pidites would probably say I’m mistaking it for astringency. Whatever, it’s amazing.

Bottled@SBWF2008. Close to black colour, mediumsized beigeish brown head. Aroma is coffee, syrup, roasted malts as well as some smoked wooden notes. Flavour is hops, grass and coffee along with some ryebreadish notes. If it’s really 11% it hides the alcohol extremely well!

22oz bottle, 2008 vintage. thanks to kan for this! pours dark brown with tan head. espresso and chocolate aroma. same for the flavor but quite a bit of vanilla coming in as well. velvety body, 11% really? alcohol is well hidden. nice beer but devil over a barrel knocks this beer all over the place.
