Interesting nose of dark chocolate syrup and fruity black cherry and plum notes, some sherry, and some sweet brandy-like chocolate liqueur notes. Flavor at first is sort of pasty, but quickly turns more sweet and syrupy like chocolate ice-cream topping... some sweet alcohol notes and more of that sherry and brandy character comes through. I actually really like this, and I’m not exactly sure why, but the liqueur chocolate and dessert-like sweetness is pretty easy to like. mar (1822), Dallas, Texas, USA

This one was very, very nice. Tried it at home too. One bottle left to keep for a while. Black colored brew. Bitterness all over the place. Liquorice, dark chocolate, coffee, spices. All in the aroma and flavor. Still it’s very smooth and balanced. Nice oak flavored too. Very nice one. Naven (869), Poway, California, USA

I haven’t had a beer that made me say "wow" in a while. Deep, rich dark color. Flavor is smooth, velvety porter goodness. Incredibly smooth. Barrel aging was there, but rather light. Would have liked to taste the bourbon a little more, but thats just me. Still, a stellar brew. grandridge (222), Port Clinton, Ohio, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Aug 15, 2008 First off I have to say that Black Butte was one of the original beers that got me into craft. So I was looking forward to getting my hands on a few of these. Pours black with a light tan head. Aroma is smoke, I can actually smell some black butte in there. Also in the aroma is wood, caramel, and roasted malt. Flavor is smoke, wood, chocolate, caramel, and finished strong with coffee. This is good but needs to mellow a bit. It may take a year or more. I don’t know that’s why I got 6, This will be an amazing beer after the heat comes down. Big thanks to Tom for this one. ratman197 (3189), Arvada, Colorado, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Aug 15, 2008 Bomber poured a clear dark brown nearly black with a small lingering brown head. Aromas of bitter chocolate, coffee, vanilla, pepper, light wood and a hint of whiskey. Palate was medium to full bodied and smooth with a lightly dry warming finish. Flavors of dark chocolate, roasted malt, vanilla, light coffee, light licorice and a hint of whiskey with a smooth warming bittersweet finish.
I don’t know why Deschutes bothers barrel aging minor amounts of beer and blending it back. It’s barley noticable and I’m sure it drives up the cost. I need to work on my beer snobery in terms of the cool words you all use, but this beer is amazing.
