Commercial Description:
XX - 20th Anniversary, released 2008
XXI - 21st Anniversary, released 2009

This masterpiece is a tribute to Black Butte Porter, the revolutionary Deschutes Brewery beer that has excited beer enthusiasts since 1988. This special Reserve Series release is a colossal version of Black Butte Porter. Our brewers enhanced Black Butte XXI by adding some Theo’s Chocolate cocoa nibs from Seattle, dry-hopping it with 100 pounds of Bellatazza’s locally roasted coffee, and then aging a portion of it in Stranahan’s Colorado whiskey barrels. These regional partners provided quality artisan ingredients that give this commemorative beer a truly handcrafted complexity.
Released as Black Butte XX in 2008 to celebrate our 20th Anniversary.

Poured black with a tan head. Aroma of coffee, chocolate, and bourbon... predictable, but good. The flavor follows, somewhat sweet with some coffee, lots of buttery bourbon, and some notes of bittersweet dark chocolate. The only real surprise from this beer is the aggressive carbonation... I would have preferred a chewier body. Well-made beer, not many surprises, good.

Much thanks to kmweaver for sharing this one at BCTC and making it a point for me to have a chance to try this one. Pours a deep black with a medium creamy tan head. Aroma of dark chocolate, sweet caramel notes, some light coffee and some hops were still there, some vanilla and oak as well. Flavor of coffee, dark fruits, a little on the sweet side, dark chocolate, some chewy hops and light bourbon.

Pours black with a small light brown head. Medium to full bodied looking. Smells of dark, bitter chocolate, coffee, creamy dark malt, and even a touch of dark fruit as well. The flavor seems much of the same, pretty creamy with lots of chocolate and coffee, with some vanilla to balance that out a bit. Pretty intense and rich. The alcohol was pretty noticeable throughout. Almost gave it a burnt woodsy character to it. Pretty nice though.

Wow. Very complex, huge flavors of coffee, chocolate, caramel, a light hop and some smoked bourbon. A fantastic mouthfeel -- very thick. Pours thick like oil, too. A new overall fav!

Pours a black beer with a brown head. Aroma of coffee, alcohol and hops. Flavor of coffee, malt and a bit of burned flavor.

This is actually a really amazing beer. Pours black with a thin tan head. Great aroma, full of chocolate and mainly coffee. Nice bourbon flavor and I would think the beer would age nicely. Great coffee flavor, I really enjoyed this beer. Hides the 11% well.

Sample at O’Brien’s in San Diego. This beer pours a dark brownish-black color with a medium and foamy light brown head that diminishes slowly. Patches of lacing on the glass. Lots of coffee in the nose, as well as dark chocolate and malt. Full-bodied with roasted malt, coffee and chocolate flavors, along with spikes of hops here and there. The finish is roasty with a lingering coffee aftertaste. Very good all around.

Bottle in trade from ditmier. Thanks!
Pours dark black with a short lived tan head. Smell is dar roasty malt a hint of coffee and a whole lot of stale cardboard like background to the malt. Not very nice smelling. Taste is odd. Mostly some coffee and cardboard with alcohol flavor creeping in. Dull and unappealing alcoholic stale roasty malt flavor. Nowhere near as good as The Abyss, which is still one of my all time favorites. This was a drainpour.
