Commercial Description:
XX - 20th Anniversary, released 2008
XXI - 21st Anniversary, released 2009

This masterpiece is a tribute to Black Butte Porter, the revolutionary Deschutes Brewery beer that has excited beer enthusiasts since 1988. This special Reserve Series release is a colossal version of Black Butte Porter. Our brewers enhanced Black Butte XXI by adding some Theo’s Chocolate cocoa nibs from Seattle, dry-hopping it with 100 pounds of Bellatazza’s locally roasted coffee, and then aging a portion of it in Stranahan’s Colorado whiskey barrels. These regional partners provided quality artisan ingredients that give this commemorative beer a truly handcrafted complexity.
Released as Black Butte XX in 2008 to celebrate our 20th Anniversary.

Bottle. Dark brown/black pour, minimal carbonation and aroma of very bitter coffee and some booze. Flavor was also bitter coffee, some vanilla and bitter chocolate. Finished warm, alcoholic and dry. Very good and well priced for what it is.

Pitch black color, light brown head. Charcoal, marshmallows, dark chocolate, big coffee beans, vanilla, dark chocolate, marshmallows, big espresso mouth. WOW, the espresso beans REALLY jump out. Fun stuff.

Side by side of 08 and 09. Pours pitch black with tan head. Aroma was pretty much the same for both with a touch of oxidation showing through with the 08. Cocoa, chocolate, coffee, and some vanilla. Viscous mouthfeel. Flavor follows the nose exactly. Both brews were excellent. The 08 had some darker chocolate and slight oxidation showing through. While the 09 had a little more alcohol (albeit oh so slight coming through) with a touch more bourbon. Both brews were fantastic.

Poured black as oil with a brown stained head. Nose was huge on coffee, hint of chocolate, then just background sweet fruits. Taste had gobs of depth. big but unoffensive coffee flavors in the front, smooth milk chocolate, hints of figs and prunes, finishes with a kick of alcohol heat.

Bottle, XXI. Pours black with a perfectly balanced brown head. Espresso grounds, chocolate, and malts are all over the place in this beer. The burbon barrel aging adds a bit of that smoky/sweet flavor you sometimes find in scotch. Certainly gets better as it warms up. I gave the palate a 3/5 because it seems a bit underdeveloped. I fully expect this beer to age excellently, and am saving another bottle for just such a reason. WIth some mellowing, this beer could go from being really good to great.

22 oz bottle. Smells and tastes spicy. I’m a big fan of Deschutes’ Black Butte Porter, but my already high expectations for this beer were exceeded after just two drinks. If Black Butte Porter is Bruce Banner, XXI is the Incredible Hulk, beefing up an already great beer to unparalleled heights.
