Commercial Description:
XX - 20th Anniversary, released 2008
XXI - 21st Anniversary, released 2009

This masterpiece is a tribute to Black Butte Porter, the revolutionary Deschutes Brewery beer that has excited beer enthusiasts since 1988. This special Reserve Series release is a colossal version of Black Butte Porter. Our brewers enhanced Black Butte XXI by adding some Theo’s Chocolate cocoa nibs from Seattle, dry-hopping it with 100 pounds of Bellatazza’s locally roasted coffee, and then aging a portion of it in Stranahan’s Colorado whiskey barrels. These regional partners provided quality artisan ingredients that give this commemorative beer a truly handcrafted complexity.
Released as Black Butte XX in 2008 to celebrate our 20th Anniversary.

bottles GABF 2008 & Skyview. Well, this was clearly a porter. Huge coffee aroma with massive hops ht to it. A body light enough despite the alcohol to remind me what it’s supposed to be. Faint oak and well balanced bourbon - barely perceptible in fact.

Courtesy of Gilliard. The aroma is comprised of chocolate, molasses, toasted and roasted malts with strong hints of cooked dark fruits. The flavor side of things is similar but with tons of coffee. Very solid mouth feel. Extra long finish. Quite tasty.

Bottle thx to Sune. Pitch black with a small brown head. A bit thin bodied but pretty well balanced with notes of chocolate, coffee, dark dried fruit and hops.

(bottle - 22 oz) Dark black pour with a thin tan head. Aroma is incredibly roasted with a lot of coffee flavor and a strong bourbon note underneath the roast and chocolate. Flavor is very roasted with a ton of coffee and chocolate flavors. The bourbon comes through near the end and adds a nice sweetness to it. Incredibly deep and rich. I would say borders on an imperial stout. Really good.

Bomber, Pours blackish brown with a thick and lacy tan head. Aroma of chocolate, brown sugar, bourbon, smoke. Full, oily body and minimal carbonation.Sweet brown sugar and milk chocolate taste. Licorice and tar finish with a bit of alcohol heat. I think this beer may need a bit of time to settle down.

On tap at Portland Brew Pub--Deep, opaque black with thick, tan head. Heavy chocolate and malty flavors. Sweet, yeasty, bitter and mildly acidic. Not too bad.

Bottle in trade from ditmier. Thanks!
Pours dark black with a short lived tan head. Smell is dar roasty malt a hint of coffee and a whole lot of stale cardboard like background to the malt. Not very nice smelling. Taste is odd. Mostly some coffee and cardboard with alcohol flavor creeping in. Dull and unappealing alcoholic stale roasty malt flavor. Nowhere near as good as The Abyss, which is still one of my all time favorites. This was a drainpour.
