Commercial Description:
XX - 20th Anniversary, released 2008
XXI - 21st Anniversary, released 2009

This masterpiece is a tribute to Black Butte Porter, the revolutionary Deschutes Brewery beer that has excited beer enthusiasts since 1988. This special Reserve Series release is a colossal version of Black Butte Porter. Our brewers enhanced Black Butte XXI by adding some Theo’s Chocolate cocoa nibs from Seattle, dry-hopping it with 100 pounds of Bellatazza’s locally roasted coffee, and then aging a portion of it in Stranahan’s Colorado whiskey barrels. These regional partners provided quality artisan ingredients that give this commemorative beer a truly handcrafted complexity.
Released as Black Butte XX in 2008 to celebrate our 20th Anniversary.

22oz bottle from BevMo La Jolla. Pours black with a medium sized beige head that became a thin ring after a few seconds. Tons of cocoa dust, bitter chocolate, coffee, spice, and some dark fruits on the nose. Flavor was big and bold just like the nose. Alcohol was abundant but not over powering. Amazing mouth feel similar to that of Abyss but a little smoother.

Pours an oily brown with thin whispy swirls on top. Roasty, nutty nose with a slight tart touch, with added hints of dried fruits and chocolate. Smooth yet sufficiently hoppy mouthfeel, with waves of chocolate, nuts, dried fruits, vanilla, bourbon, chocolate mousse, Super smooth oily flavorful concoction here...quite impressed. The alcohol is pleasantly warming.. .this shit is off the hook relaxing, need to drink one with a cigar next time.

second bottle was different than first...huge dry coffee flavors, hoppy, ans extremely boozy...decreases on flavor and palate.

Bottle from Windy City. Black pour with a smallish dirty brownish head. Strong roasted malty aroma. Quite a bit of chocolate and coffee. A little alcohol as well. Rich roasted flavor with some sweetness. Good roasted coffee flavors. A little bitterness and alcohol in the finish. A very potent and tasty brew.

2008 Edition - 22 oz. bottle. Thanks to trades with WeeHeavySD, daknole & jake65, I have three bottles! Pours black with a moderate, bubbly light brown head that lasted beyond mid-glass and coated the glass with each sip. Very pleasant aroma of prunes, chocolate, coffee, vanilla, bourbon, and oak. Wow! The flavor is just a bit less complex the aroma, but still quite nice with chocolate, coffee, roasted malt, vanilla, bourbon and oak. The prunes that I picked up in the aroma just don’t seem to be present in the flavor, and that’s the real difference. Medium bitterness at the finish. Dries out on the palate in the aftertaste. Very enjoyable beer!

2007 GABF Black pour nice tan head, well laced. Nice java & chocolate, aroma, roast malts, very nice. Palate is pretty avg. Sweet chocolates, followed by a big fresh coffee kick w/ a touch of cream. Fantastic coffee beer, I can’t wait to get more of this.

Another great beer shared by Yobdoog. Almost black in color with a light brown head. Aroma of strong chocolate, burnt/roasted grain, molasses, oak, and mild bourbon. The flavors are really well integrated, strong coffee, roast (more of the black patent than roasted barley), molasses, body is full for an imperial porter, with touches of wood and very mild bourbon. Finishes bitter with lingering coffee, hints of fruit with a touch of alcohol and some light hop bitterness. Thanks Trevor!
