Commercial Description:
XX - 20th Anniversary, released 2008
XXI - 21st Anniversary, released 2009

This masterpiece is a tribute to Black Butte Porter, the revolutionary Deschutes Brewery beer that has excited beer enthusiasts since 1988. This special Reserve Series release is a colossal version of Black Butte Porter. Our brewers enhanced Black Butte XXI by adding some Theo’s Chocolate cocoa nibs from Seattle, dry-hopping it with 100 pounds of Bellatazza’s locally roasted coffee, and then aging a portion of it in Stranahan’s Colorado whiskey barrels. These regional partners provided quality artisan ingredients that give this commemorative beer a truly handcrafted complexity.
Released as Black Butte XX in 2008 to celebrate our 20th Anniversary.

Draft at brewery: black bodied. Aroma is coffee, chocolate, cocoa, caramel, darker fruits, light vanilla and barrel. Full bodied, quite sweet, alcohol hidden well. Enjoyable stuff.

Draft and several different bottle samples. Black with a frothy tan head. Medium strong aromas of roasted malts, cocoa, with some oak. Silky smooth, rich mouthfeel. Great taste is rich Belgian dark chocolates, mild roast coffee and roasted nuts with some vinous sweetness. The oak flavors and aroma are in the background here and just adds to the depth. This is Obsidian on steriods, love it !

highly carbonated dark black. smells like someone got drunk and rolled in chocolate syrup.chocolate, strong lingering intense roast coffee, hoo boy. warming alcohol presence. this one won’t sneak up on anyone. the coffee is dominating a bit too much for me at the moment, but still an enjoyable beer. 4 9 7 3 16

Dark pour with thin brown head a spotty lace. Coffee and vanilla on the nose. Big roasty flavor almost smokey, coffee, chocolate, bourbon and raisins This is the second time I’ve had this and I have to say the alcohol has mellowed out quite a bit

2008 bottle. This dark brown ale poured with a bubbly tan head and a chocolate aroma. There is an intense chocolate and roasted coffee flavor with an alcohol trailer that remains on the palate for a while. Very, very tasty.

Thanks to durhambeer for sharing this. Pours a dark black brew with a tan head. The nose was sweet, some coffee, bakers chocolate. Didn’t get any oak or bourbon from the nose or flavor. The flavor was lightly smokey, more bitter from the coffee and chocolate than I would have liked, some roast and some waxy hop flavor. Overall I feel like this one is pretty overrated.
