Some caramelized vegetables as well. Flavor again has the dry, but still somehow lively, wood with the sweeter caramel and malty aspects blending in. Interesting and tasty beer. It poured cold, so it needed time to open, and the initial nose was bourbon but in a subdued manner. I held it as I walked around and talked with Craig, waiting for it to open up a bit. When it did, the flavor was very nice, with chocolate, vanilla, wood, coffee and bourbon, all melding wonderfully together. As it warmed, the bourbon took over a bit and it was a bit hot, but still darn good. The mouthfeel was like velvet. RSRIZZO (1368), Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA
| 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 19/20 | Jul 20, 2008 Aroma is a deep, sweet roasted scent. Color is a solid black with a tight head and light carbonation. Taste is rich, sweet and tasted. Starting with a full body it goes down easy with a sweet bite at the end. Finish comes in sweet with a roasted malt taste and a little dried fruit then a bitter chocolate flavor. After taste is more of the same with a little alcohol showing. Wow this is an amazing brew, its extremely complex, rich and bold and soo tasty you just can’t stop drinking it SuzyGreenberg (1368), Seattle, Washington, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Jul 31, 2008 22 oz. bottle - pours jet black with thin cream colored head around the edges; huge aromas of coffee, molasses, dark chocolate, but mainly big time coffee; just a killer nose; texture is slightly sticky and syrupy; drinks very smooth with no notice of alcohol; dry, roasty, creamy and chocolaty; a big beer all over, but very drinkable at the same time; flavor falls just short of the decadence 2007, but very, very nice; everything seems to be in equilibrium in terms of flavor, texture, aroma; bourbon smooths out the flavors and creates a rich, ozzy brew; my type of brew indeed ilovedarkbeer (1365), Dallas, Texas, USA

Aroma is roast, chocolate, barrel, and pepper. Flavor is roast, coffee, chocolate, earth, oak, and pepper. Medium-full and smooth on the palate. Great beer, better than standard Black Butte which is no slouch itself. NoiZe (1357), Mooi Zeist, Netherlands

This one was very, very nice. Tried it at home too. One bottle left to keep for a while. Black colored brew. Bitterness all over the place. Liquorice, dark chocolate, coffee, spices. All in the aroma and flavor. Still it’s very smooth and balanced. Nice oak flavored too. Very nice one. pantanap (1354), Chicago, Illinois, USA

aroma of roasted malt, coffee, and just a hint of yeast. not too much in the way or bourbon or oak but that would remain consistent with what i found with the
abyss.... clavors were of thick chocolate, molasses, roasted malt, and coffee. finished off with a bitter-roast coffee component. thick, full, and chewy mouthfee.
pretty good but gets old after awhile
