Commercial Description:
XX - 20th Anniversary, released 2008
XXI - 21st Anniversary, released 2009

This masterpiece is a tribute to Black Butte Porter, the revolutionary Deschutes Brewery beer that has excited beer enthusiasts since 1988. This special Reserve Series release is a colossal version of Black Butte Porter. Our brewers enhanced Black Butte XXI by adding some Theo’s Chocolate cocoa nibs from Seattle, dry-hopping it with 100 pounds of Bellatazza’s locally roasted coffee, and then aging a portion of it in Stranahan’s Colorado whiskey barrels. These regional partners provided quality artisan ingredients that give this commemorative beer a truly handcrafted complexity.
Released as Black Butte XX in 2008 to celebrate our 20th Anniversary.

Excellent brew. Had high hopes for this one and it did not disappoint. Lots of coffee, molasses, and tobacco on the nose. Flavor is similar, but mellows in the finish with some nice bourbon notes. Wasn’t as thick as I excpected, but still a badass brew.

2008 Bottle - Boy howdy, pours slick black but not as dark as others...decently bitter tan head, aroma is burnt sugar, chocolate, oak and slight bbq...flavour is wonderfully complex, vanilla oak, chocolate, great hop presence, coffee, malt, more malt and a touch of smoke...not quite as good as Abyss, but respectable none the less...

Viscous black pour with a solid dense cocoa-colored head. Nose is dark roasted Starbucks, sticky caramel, and perhaps a little oak. Flavor is assertive. Rich chocolate, dark fruit, brown sugar, and bourbon. A very aggressive example of the style...loved it.

22oz. bottle. Dark black, short lasting head. Strong alcohol at first taste, all the way down the throat, very smooth afterward. Should be real good after a year or two.

22 oz. bottle from multiple sources. Pours black with a medium sized frothy tan head. The aroma is roasted malts with dark chocolate, oak, bourbon, cocoa nibs, vanilla and coffee. one word to describe the flavor is BIG. This has decadent chocolate, creamy vanilla, roasted malt, mellow bourbon and oak, some dark fruit, cocoa, and flashes of the 11% as it warms. For all of that, the balance is surprising. Full creamy body. This is a standout beer.

22 OZ bottle via Roth’s. XX. Pours black with a huge brown head that takes up 75% of the mug and takes for ever to dissipate. Nose is chocolate, roasted barley, coffee. Taste as it smells. Starts and ends with lots of bittersweet coacoa, and in between there is some plums, licorice, coffee and bourbon. The bourbon lingers for a long while into the aftertaste. I also get a bit of smokiness from this. THe hops are there and balance the sweetness and roastiness quite well. Definately a west coast version.

pours a jet black with a small brown head, good lacing. smell of cocoa, touch of coffee, licorice, touch of vanilla. taste is sweet up front (didn’t see that coming), bold, licorice, bitter-sweet chocolate, touch of coffee, somewhat smokey.

Wonderful looking ale.Pitch black with a lovelly thick creamy dark tan head. Very handsome.’ Strong toasted malts aroma, backed by esspresso coffee and dark chocolate (70%) tones, small attractive hint of alcohol. Quite sweet but delicious flavours, here in the flavour department the cream is added to the coffee and gettng some accents of dark semi-dried fruits. This is like a good Christmas pudding covered in a rich cream and rum sauce eaten with some excellent coffee. Very nice. Wonderous palate..smooth and silky..creamy even, the alcohol complimenst ,rather than hurts. A great beer, though I believe a winter release around Xmas would be wonderful.
