So many things are going on in the beer, a strong oak flavor, the expected chocolate and coffee, distinct licorice. Very good but all in all perhaps a little too much of a good thing. Wish I’d bought a second bottle to cellar, but maybe it’ll pop up again in the future. kkearn (1013), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Aug 28, 2009 Black Butte XX bottle. Pours pitch black, capped with a medium sized frothy brown head. Aroma of ash, vanilla, burnt chocolate malt, prune, wood, and spice. Flavor is very charcoaly, with chocolate, vanilla, oak, prune and other dark fruits, coffee and some hops building towards the finish. Medium to full bodied. Solid beer, but the barrel treatment is a bit overdone. fidel (1012), Livermore, California, USA

| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jan 14, 2009 The pour was essentially black with a short lived, one finger tall tan head. The aroma was roasted malt, chocolate, light hops, coffee and booze. The flavor was roasted malt and light booze with some chocolate and a touch of hoppiness. The mouthfeel was a bit disappointing. Overall the beer was slightly distracted and a bit of a mess. I’d wait another 12 months or so before trying any more of this, but I don’t know if even that would help. jimbowood (970), Athens, Georgia, USA

I could sware this was labeled "Coffee Double Black" Nonetheless, this was an awesome brew. Excellent blend of espresso, chocolate, alcohol, vanilla, and cream. A thick mouthfeel. Very, very good and very, very strong. stefanje (952), (Santee) San Diego, California, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jul 17, 2008 Updated: Jul 24, 2009650 ml bottle from Bev4less. This rate for XX ver. Pours black with a tan head that quickly recedes to 1/4 inch. The aroma is moderate in strength with chocolate, plums, coffee, dust and licorice. The flavor is dark biter chocolate, black coffee, a bit of anise and some sweet whiskey. The mouthfeel is full and creamy. The finish is long with lingering dark biter chocolate . Overall: Worth every bit of the hype that it gets. This is a fine porter.
Re-rate note: drank XXI, I find the nose to be more pronounced, and the flavor bolder. uping my score just a tad.
