Commercial Description:
XX - 20th Anniversary, released 2008
XXI - 21st Anniversary, released 2009

This masterpiece is a tribute to Black Butte Porter, the revolutionary Deschutes Brewery beer that has excited beer enthusiasts since 1988. This special Reserve Series release is a colossal version of Black Butte Porter. Our brewers enhanced Black Butte XXI by adding some Theo’s Chocolate cocoa nibs from Seattle, dry-hopping it with 100 pounds of Bellatazza’s locally roasted coffee, and then aging a portion of it in Stranahan’s Colorado whiskey barrels. These regional partners provided quality artisan ingredients that give this commemorative beer a truly handcrafted complexity.
Released as Black Butte XX in 2008 to celebrate our 20th Anniversary.

Poured black. Nose is roasted malt, mild smoke, dark ripe fruit, bread, mild tannins, some cocoa and coffee. Nice bourbon and booze. Flavor is soft bourbon with vanilla notes, sweet malts, dark chocolate, big roast, mild coffee. Very nice.

Black pour with a near black head. Seriously dark for a beer. Up front coffee and bourbon aroma. Flavor lends some licorice, cherry, oak, more coffee, chocolate, and caramel. Just a tad thin, noticeably boozy but not in a bad way.

Bottle from tyler. Dark black in color, decent head and good lacing. Strong aroma of chocolate and coffee. Taste is pretty much the same. Lots of coffee, roasted malt, chocolate all blended together. Good texture and carbonation level. I wouldnt of guessed it to be 11 percent, the alcohol was hiddent very well. Overall a tasty beer. Thanks tyler

Wow! More oak than bourbon - lots of dark roasted maltiness. Flavor has notes of chocolate, tannin, charcoal, sugar and a little pine. Nose is bourbon, however. Finish is very sesame ending on a sweet and slightly salty note.

On tap @ San Diego Brewing Company. Wow, what a great surprise this was. I haven’t had a beer that made me say "wow" in a while. Deep, rich dark color. Flavor is smooth, velvety porter goodness. Incredibly smooth. Barrel aging was there, but rather light. Would have liked to taste the bourbon a little more, but thats just me. Still, a stellar brew.

Thanks to Kegbear or this one. Pour ws thick engine oil with a lovely dark tan head. Aroma of alcohol, chocolate, and much sweet malt. Very full body with strong sweet malt, great roasted characters, and a light coffee bitterness at the finish. Very well blended but a bit thick for a porter. I would call this an imperial stout. Either way, great brew. Would love to age this guy for a couple years.

Bomber from kegbear. XX vintage. Pours almost black with one finger tan head. Aroma is bourbon, vanilla, chocolate, caramel, roasted malts and light coffee. Flavor is smooth and complex with chocolate, vanilla, bourbon, wood, light coffee, caramel and light smoke. Can definitely taste the bourbon is not harsh at all. Really smooth for a BA porter. Mouthfeel was thick and creamy and really coated the glass. This was really good and I wish I had another bottle. I had this right before Noreaster and Black Butte blew it out of the water.

22 oz. Picked up at John’s Marketplace in Portland. Nice black beer; dark black with a head that fades away slowly. Slight chocolate head. For a porter, this beer is amazing. Huge roast/bourbon aroma. I have never smelled a porter like this before. Very pungent beer. Slight vanilla aroma as well. Very nuanced aroma. Not my favorite beer, but for the style this thing is amazing. Huge roast flavor. This beer is bitter due to the amount of coffee it has in it. Wow, this is a bitter/roasty imperial strong porter. Palate is a bit thin for an imperial strong porter. Such a great cominbation of malt and roast. One of the best roast and malt flavors I have ever had.
