Commercial Description:
XX - 20th Anniversary, released 2008
XXI - 21st Anniversary, released 2009

This masterpiece is a tribute to Black Butte Porter, the revolutionary Deschutes Brewery beer that has excited beer enthusiasts since 1988. This special Reserve Series release is a colossal version of Black Butte Porter. Our brewers enhanced Black Butte XXI by adding some Theo’s Chocolate cocoa nibs from Seattle, dry-hopping it with 100 pounds of Bellatazza’s locally roasted coffee, and then aging a portion of it in Stranahan’s Colorado whiskey barrels. These regional partners provided quality artisan ingredients that give this commemorative beer a truly handcrafted complexity.
Released as Black Butte XX in 2008 to celebrate our 20th Anniversary.

XX - Dark, deep brown with a big brown head. Huge burnt, sweet malt backbone with a spicy earthy component. Heavy roasted coffee bean intertwined with burnt caramel and slight bits of silky chocolate - lots of it - and hints of vanilla. A bit of musty wood and a touch of smoke. Lots going on in here and its all really well done. XXI- Seems to have a richer chocolate and bourbon component as well as a pronounced alcohol nose.

Bottle. Black with a thick brown fluffy head. Chocolate, caramel, roastiness, and light cherry aromas with a light alcohol presence. Deep flavor, opens thick and sweet with lots of coffee rolling into the middle and finish. Balanced sweetness with an engulfing roastiness and a good cocoa powder bitter component. Some bourbon notes show up as it warms. Thick, chewy mouthfeel. Warming alcohol shows up only in the belly.

7/20/08 On draught at the Dog & Pony, Renton, Wa. Aroma is very rich, sugary, with molasses and roast dark fruit; slightly alcoholic. Appearance is dark brown with a well maintained tan head. Flavor is very rich as well, with the vanilla/cask character dominanting, followed by a unique black malt peppering and molasses finish. Mouthfeel is very creamy and syrupy, slightly warm, with a medium carb texture. Overall big and complex, there’s a lot going on here.

Bottled and on tap at O’Briens. Pours black with clear mahogany edges. Initial frothy brown head with low carbonation and microbubbles. Rich aroma of sweet molasses, cocoa, coffee and a slight hint of bourbon. The proportional use of barrel-aging has imparted a medium whiskey tone in the flavor, but not enough to really taste the oak. Tons more coffee in the flavor with smoke, cacao and a high dose of bittering hops that make for a long-lasting linger. Nuances of bourbon throughout make for a really pleasurable drink. Thick and chewy body. Tap version is much sweeter; rating is for bottle. Very nice!

On tap at Citybeer. Pour was black with a thin tan head. Aroma was very nice, with coffee, chocolate, oak. Taste was also of bitter chocolate, coffee, sweet bitter notes, oak, and vanilla. Mouth was excellent, very smooth. Finish was bitter and nice. This is a great rich beer. *** Bottle. About the same, though a little less smooth than tap. Still a great beer.

Thanks to jonpol for the recommendation. Poured a luxurious black from the bottle with a brown head of foam. Balanced notes of cocoa and coffee as well as a bit of smoke that carries into the flavor. Thick bodied and malty. Mild lacing and notes of alcohol. One bottle yields intoxication.

Bottle. Way better than the Abyss as it got released. Pours almost balck with a brown head. Great aromas of coffee and chocolate and a bit of wood and leather. Flavors are dominated by coffee and chocolate malts, the finish has a bit of alcohol burn and a pretty strong bitterness. The palate and mouthfeel is outstanding, silky smooth. Easily the best beer Deschutes has produced that I have tasted.
