Commercial Description:
XX - 20th Anniversary, released 2008
XXI - 21st Anniversary, released 2009

This masterpiece is a tribute to Black Butte Porter, the revolutionary Deschutes Brewery beer that has excited beer enthusiasts since 1988. This special Reserve Series release is a colossal version of Black Butte Porter. Our brewers enhanced Black Butte XXI by adding some Theo’s Chocolate cocoa nibs from Seattle, dry-hopping it with 100 pounds of Bellatazza’s locally roasted coffee, and then aging a portion of it in Stranahan’s Colorado whiskey barrels. These regional partners provided quality artisan ingredients that give this commemorative beer a truly handcrafted complexity.
Released as Black Butte XX in 2008 to celebrate our 20th Anniversary.

Bottle, shared by dchmela. Pours a dark thick black with a tan head. Chocolate, vanilla, caramel sweetness on the nose. Big chocolate, roast, caramel, a bitter end, strange aftertaste with a lot of burnt roast in the finish. High carb for such a big beer, kept it from being too chewy.

Pours black, but brown around the edges with a tan head that retains pretty well. Smell of anise, roast, vanilla, ash, and the smell of green wood on a still living tree. Same thing with the living wood in the taste, as well as cocoa, vanilla, caramel, charcoal, and some roastiness. Thicker than medium body and light carbonation; quite smooth. Pretty tasty, though I don’t know that I’d worry about getting more of this.

Exceptional appearance with rather thick tan head that almost fools you into thinking it is a nitro head. It retains very well and leaves thin lace. Nose is a sexy beast of coffee, roasted malt, and very dark chocolate. On the palate the alcohol is masked fairly well even though my bottle is quite young, and the medium to full bodied ale pulls through a very masculine roasted coffee flavor with big malt, and only a slight tang of flavor from the bourbon barrel influence. Amazing beer and surprisingly drinkable.

On tap at Mickey Finn’s. Soft aroma of chocolate , roasted malt, marshamallow. Opaque near-black w/ vague head. Sfot int he mouth, aromatic, a little weight. Rich flavors of chocolate and coffee, a dark grain sense, licorice later i the glass; and you know iwht all this malt acito there are hops laboring to keep the blanace, which they do. this is the best porter i’ve ever had, or the best sweet strong ale.

Pours tall tan head. Medium to large sized bubbles, but they don’t break down very fast. Wonderful porter aroma with a blend of coffee and bourbon in the aroma. Flavor is absolutely heavenly. Wonderful bourbon wood tones which intertwine with the coffee. Not really catching the cocoa nibs, but also not really missing it either. Nice warming on the palllate with bourbon aftertaste. A shame this is a limited edition. Also a shame that its $10/22oz. bottle, or I’d be stocking some of this in the basement to see how it mellows over time. If you can find it...GET IT!! If you can’t and want to trade for something equally unique from your neck of the woods hit me up!

22oz bottle: pours pitch black with small tan head, aroma of chocolate, roasted malt, some caramel and some slightly sweet rasins, flavor is even better lots of chocolate, roased malt, caramel and rasins and even a hint of spices the oak comes through but isnt over powering like some BBA beers. I am glad to note i dont even pick up any of the coffee that they claim is in there. what a great all around beer.

Bottle courtesy of Sparky27. Poured black with a thick, creamy brown head. Aroma is burnt malt with notes of rasin, coffee, and ash. Medium bodied with soft carbonation and a somewhat oily mouthfeel. Flavor is quite sweet, lots of rasin, tobacco, burnt malts and a touch of bourbon. Tangy, boozy finish. Slightly unbalanced, very sweet and tangy.

Bottle, thanks to danielcurtis81 for sharing on his wedding week. Pours pitch black with a thin fading head. Nose has some soy and chocolate malt. Taste is smooth, sweet chocolate/roasted malt with some soy. Mouthfeel is a little slimy, but this was overall very good.
