Commercial Description:
XX - 20th Anniversary, released 2008
XXI - 21st Anniversary, released 2009

This masterpiece is a tribute to Black Butte Porter, the revolutionary Deschutes Brewery beer that has excited beer enthusiasts since 1988. This special Reserve Series release is a colossal version of Black Butte Porter. Our brewers enhanced Black Butte XXI by adding some Theo’s Chocolate cocoa nibs from Seattle, dry-hopping it with 100 pounds of Bellatazza’s locally roasted coffee, and then aging a portion of it in Stranahan’s Colorado whiskey barrels. These regional partners provided quality artisan ingredients that give this commemorative beer a truly handcrafted complexity.
Released as Black Butte XX in 2008 to celebrate our 20th Anniversary.

Bottle, thanks to danielcurtis81 for sharing on his wedding week. Pours pitch black with a thin fading head. Nose has some soy and chocolate malt. Taste is smooth, sweet chocolate/roasted malt with some soy. Mouthfeel is a little slimy, but this was overall very good.

Tasted last years XX release. Pours a dark brown with a dark brown head. Aroma is chocolate, licorice, lactose, alcohol, dark fruit, and vanilla. Flavor is very sweet and a little tart with dark fruity flavors, a lot of plum and raisin. It also has chocolate, coffee, brown sugar, and some mild hop bitterness at the end. The tartness and sweetness compliment each other well. I think the year of aging has done this beer some good.

Deep opaque black with a small tan head and good lacing. Strong roasted coffee and chocoalte aromas with a clear alcohol presence and plenty of bourbon. Taste is very much the same, with the bourbon coming on a bit stronger. Bitter dark chocolate, french roasted coffee, berries, hops, and cocoa powder meld for a powerful flavor profile. Medium to full body, low carbonation, slight lingering hops, but the coffee and chocolates dominate the aftertaste. This is great.

22 oz. bottle. Pours black with a thin light brown head, decent lacing. Aroma is sweet Chocolate and some roastiness, pretty mellow. Flavor is chocolate and coffee, hints of vanilla and oak. Slight bitterness and alcohol balances it out nicely. Smooth as silk with light carbonation.

Had this on tap at the Deschutes Public House in Portland’s Pearl Dist. Colour... black to dark brown from top to bottom and no head whatsoever. Nose... dark brewed coffee, a smidge of dark chocolate and a little booze. Palate... frothy C02 (interesting, given the lack of head on the pour!), a smack of coffee, like plunging my nose into this morning’s used coffee grounds and taking a BIG snort! Next up, high cocoa mass bittersweet chocolate, nice hop bite on the soft palate and then lingering, "fumes" of coffee and booze.

Black, cappuccino head and lots of lacing. Smells of coffee, chocolate, and caramel. Tastes of malts, chocolate, coffee and bourbon. Very creamy. It’s Black Butte--which is already a wonderful standard--but with every taste amplified. It’s a damn good beer.

Pours motor oil black with thick tan head. Aroma of chocolate and coffee. Taste is mostly chocolate and roasted malt. Thick mouthfeel. Very creamy. Bourbon was not noticeable.
