Commercial Description:
XX - 20th Anniversary, released 2008
XXI - 21st Anniversary, released 2009

This masterpiece is a tribute to Black Butte Porter, the revolutionary Deschutes Brewery beer that has excited beer enthusiasts since 1988. This special Reserve Series release is a colossal version of Black Butte Porter. Our brewers enhanced Black Butte XXI by adding some Theo’s Chocolate cocoa nibs from Seattle, dry-hopping it with 100 pounds of Bellatazza’s locally roasted coffee, and then aging a portion of it in Stranahan’s Colorado whiskey barrels. These regional partners provided quality artisan ingredients that give this commemorative beer a truly handcrafted complexity.
Released as Black Butte XX in 2008 to celebrate our 20th Anniversary.

Bottle LCRBM08. Literally black, no head to speak of. Leather, dried fruits and sweet caramel in the nose. Full bitter-sweet flavour, full bodied. Caramel, coffee and leather in the lingering bitter finish. Very well made brew........

22oz bottle, XX. Interesting nose of dark chocolate syrup and fruity black cherry and plum notes, some sherry, and some sweet brandy-like chocolate liqueur notes. Flavor at first is sort of pasty, but quickly turns more sweet and syrupy like chocolate ice-cream topping... some sweet alcohol notes and more of that sherry and brandy character comes through. I actually really like this, and I’m not exactly sure why, but the liqueur chocolate and dessert-like sweetness is pretty easy to like.

Bottle@LCRBM08. Chocolate aroma with a hint of toffee. Black colour, light brown head, good lace. Sweet, chocolate, loads of licorice, fruity, sticky. Strong flavors, highly drinkable although 11% ABV.

Draft @ Bond Street Brewpub, Bend OR. Pours a black color with a small tan head. Malty chocolate, coffe, dark fruit and vanilla aroma with some hints of licorice. Roasted malty chocolate and coffee flavor with some hints of licorice and some oaky hints. Has a long warming roasted malty chocolate finish with some hoppy bitter hints and hints of oak in the aftertaste.

Bottle shared by alexsdad06. Pours black color with a huge frothy brown head that was lasting with excellent lacing. Heavy toasted dark chocolate, wood and spicy malt aroma. Medium to full body with a thick smooth texture. Heavy roasted bittersweet flavor with a medium bittersweet spice finish of long duration. This is a standout porter.

Head is initially small, frothy/fizzy, light brown, fully diminishing. Body is dark brown to black (non-opaque, flashlight tested). Aroma is moderately malty (roasted grain, chocolate, husks), lightly hoppy (grapefruit, resin), with notes of alcohol, vanilla, whiskey, wood. Flavor is moderately to heavily sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly acidic, moderately bitter. Medium to full body, watery texture, lively carbonation, moderately alcoholic. Ho hum, not bad. A bit rough, not very refined, kinda ordinary, poor mouthfeel.

Bottle from Marcus (thanks!). Black color with a good tan head. Smells like coffee on steroids, accompanied by chocolate. Full bodied, almost oily, with chewy, creamy carbonation. Coats the mouth. Flavor is bitter toast, coffee and chocolate. Astringent. No scimping on this recipe. Finishes deadly tasty. Must be the nibs.
