Commercial Description:
XX - 20th Anniversary, released 2008
XXI - 21st Anniversary, released 2009

This masterpiece is a tribute to Black Butte Porter, the revolutionary Deschutes Brewery beer that has excited beer enthusiasts since 1988. This special Reserve Series release is a colossal version of Black Butte Porter. Our brewers enhanced Black Butte XXI by adding some Theo’s Chocolate cocoa nibs from Seattle, dry-hopping it with 100 pounds of Bellatazza’s locally roasted coffee, and then aging a portion of it in Stranahan’s Colorado whiskey barrels. These regional partners provided quality artisan ingredients that give this commemorative beer a truly handcrafted complexity.
Released as Black Butte XX in 2008 to celebrate our 20th Anniversary.

22oz Pours deep dark mahogany with a thick creamy tan head that lasted nicely through out the beer. Nice aromas of Chocolate, roasted malts, some dark fruits and a bit of alcohol. Flavors of coffee, chocolate, roasted malts, and definitely some alcohol. Finish was long and dry.

22 oz. bottle. Pours black with a thin light brown head, decent lacing. Aroma is sweet Chocolate and some roastiness, pretty mellow. Flavor is chocolate and coffee, hints of vanilla and oak. Slight bitterness and alcohol balances it out nicely. Smooth as silk with light carbonation.

Black, cappuccino head and lots of lacing. Smells of coffee, chocolate, and caramel. Tastes of malts, chocolate, coffee and bourbon. Very creamy. It’s Black Butte--which is already a wonderful standard--but with every taste amplified. It’s a damn good beer.

Bottle. Oily black, heavy, thick. Nose is heavenly, lots of coffee, burnt chocolate, toasted malts and a nice background of sweet Bourbon. So thick and velvety on the tongue, just coats the mouth in malts and dark coffee. finishes with a very pleasant Bourbon taste. Yummy!

Popped the top on this one for my anniversary with my fiancee, and it was quite worth the occasion I must say. Pours liquid black with a small beige head that quickly dissappears. Aroma is quite a bit like an imperial stout...but theyre so closely related that is no fault. Lots of malt sweetness, some coffee, toffee, and bourbon notes. Taste is rather reminiscent of Stone RIS, except that the flavor is filled out a little more. The minute amount of bourbon, oak, and coffee taste really fill in the minor gap on my palate left by their amazing beer. This one was quite amazing and well worth whatever I paid for it. Wish I had bought two. And we made cupcakes with it!

Bottle. Pours inky black with a medium tan head that laces respectably. If it wasn’t labeled an imperial porter this could be mistaken for a stout, imperial or otherwise; this is a huge beer. Bourbon is a big factor in this beer, but it’s kept in balance and doesn’t dominate. Mocha/chocolate, roast, licorice, malt, very rich but not boozy. I can only say that this strikes me as how Beer Geek Breakfast would taste were it aged 20% in bourbon barrels and that is high praise indeed. Lovely stuff!
