Commercial Description:
XX - 20th Anniversary, released 2008
XXI - 21st Anniversary, released 2009

This masterpiece is a tribute to Black Butte Porter, the revolutionary Deschutes Brewery beer that has excited beer enthusiasts since 1988. This special Reserve Series release is a colossal version of Black Butte Porter. Our brewers enhanced Black Butte XXI by adding some Theo’s Chocolate cocoa nibs from Seattle, dry-hopping it with 100 pounds of Bellatazza’s locally roasted coffee, and then aging a portion of it in Stranahan’s Colorado whiskey barrels. These regional partners provided quality artisan ingredients that give this commemorative beer a truly handcrafted complexity.
Released as Black Butte XX in 2008 to celebrate our 20th Anniversary.

Bomber shared by Yobdoog - Thanks! Pours a nice deep oily black with a lasting thin tan-orange head. Aorma is tons of deep toasted and charred mals, along with a good amount of bourbon and chocolate malt- lots of coffee packed in as well. Chocoalte flavro upfront with more charr and roast in the middle- bourbon vanilla, coffee and a dry nuttiness in the end- some tar and licorice notes as is warmed up a bit. Pretty smooth overall and a very complex interested Impy stout. I liked it.

Bomber poured a clear dark brown nearly black with a small lingering brown head. Aromas of bitter chocolate, coffee, vanilla, pepper, light wood and a hint of whiskey. Palate was medium to full bodied and smooth with a lightly dry warming finish. Flavors of dark chocolate, roasted malt, vanilla, light coffee, light licorice and a hint of whiskey with a smooth warming bittersweet finish.

I don’t know why Deschutes bothers barrel aging minor amounts of beer and blending it back. It’s barley noticable and I’m sure it drives up the cost.

Draught at the 6th Boulder Strong Ale Festival. Pours opaque with a large, creamy, dark brown head, lasting with good lacing. Aroma is heavy malt (chocolate, coffee), average hops (perfume), average yeast (leather) with notes of prunes and tar. Full bodied, creamy texture, average carbonation, and a bitter finish. Average duration, heavy sweetness, light acidity and bitterness.

Much thanks to kmweaver for sharing this one at BCTC and making it a point for me to have a chance to try this one. Pours a deep black with a medium creamy tan head. Aroma of dark chocolate, sweet caramel notes, some light coffee and some hops were still there, some vanilla and oak as well. Flavor of coffee, dark fruits, a little on the sweet side, dark chocolate, some chewy hops and light bourbon.

Bottle. Poured an opaque black color with a light brown head. Smelled of steeping barley, chocolate, roast, molasses, and alcohol. medium to full bodied with lowish carbonation. Semi-sweet with a creamy mouth feel and minimal alcohol warmth. Tasted predominantly of dark chocolate and cocoa powder. Delicious.

Bomber from The Bevmo in Encinitas. Pours black with a nice 1 finger tan head. Nose is very rich with a big kick of coffee and a touch of cocoa. Big ole nose I like form a big ole beer. Taste is sweet with a touch of bourbon and a nice roasty quality. This is a damn tasty beer, I can only imagine how good it will be in 4-8 months. Good work Deschutes on pulling another great beer and a great 20 years, it was nice being there in person in January.

1st rating of this beer. 1/1/08 with Bikesanbeer, and Deschutes was open even though we thought we it wouldn’t be open till the next day, 6th brewery of the trip. Pours black with a tan ring head. Nose is big and sweet and viscous. Taste is sweet viscous and syrupy, hoped it would have been better than it was. It was still good but the description made it sound better.

Bottle. Black with a thin brown head. Dark milk chocolate aroma, and I’m picking up ash again. Extreme coffee chocolate beer. Very tasty. Bourbon is noticeable in the finish and aftertaste.
