Commercial Description:
XX - 20th Anniversary, released 2008
XXI - 21st Anniversary, released 2009

This masterpiece is a tribute to Black Butte Porter, the revolutionary Deschutes Brewery beer that has excited beer enthusiasts since 1988. This special Reserve Series release is a colossal version of Black Butte Porter. Our brewers enhanced Black Butte XXI by adding some Theo’s Chocolate cocoa nibs from Seattle, dry-hopping it with 100 pounds of Bellatazza’s locally roasted coffee, and then aging a portion of it in Stranahan’s Colorado whiskey barrels. These regional partners provided quality artisan ingredients that give this commemorative beer a truly handcrafted complexity.
Released as Black Butte XX in 2008 to celebrate our 20th Anniversary.

(Rating #2500)

2008 Strong Ale Fest (Boulder, CO): Deep burgundy with a nice head. Intense aromas of coffee wafted up. Creamy smooth; full body. Drenched in sweetness (syrup, caramel, chocolate). Big, bold flavors and aromas of espresso and cream. Lesser notes (but still strong) of vanilla bean and dark chocolate. Mild bitterness fecklessly tried to keep up. Very tasty beer, albeit a bit too sweet for me. RERATE (bottle): Murky darkness. Rich and thick like a milkshake. Silky, too. Fruity alcohol and cocoa nose. Sour lactic intensity. Super-dark roast, tar, black licorice, bitter chocolate and espresso. Hoppy bitterness. Warming in the back of the throat. Great stuff.

22. Thanks, Terry! Solid black. Thin, burnt tan head. Rich roasty chocolatey nose. Creamy thick body. Some carb, but very restrained. Roasty, even a bit acrid, but just in spots--you really have to nurse it across the tongue to notice that. Some rich herbal hop notes bite a bit at the end. Rich, smooth, roasty, chocolatey.

Big thanks to Gillard for bringing this bottle along. Pours deep and dark with thin mocha head. The aroma is full of big toastiness along with chocolate, coffee, almonds, wood and bourbon. The aroma is deliciously bold as is the flavor. I get bold rich goodness from velvety dark chocolate, coffee, vanilla, wood, burnt malts and bourbon like booze. This is creamy, yummy, rich and very satisfying. Wow, a bit less boozy for my taste (I’m sure for most this aspect is just fine) and this one is near perfect.

Many occasions now draught and bottle. Dark black pour with a thin brown head. Aroma is pretty damn roasty with some bitter chocolate and a touch of bourbon and oak. Roasty with some bittersweetness too. Somewhat burnt notes too mesh well with the light bourbon notes in the background. Dry earthy finish lingers for a while. The alcohol is huge in this one, but it works and is enjoyable.

Draft at the Peaks Brewpub; Nose of chocolate, chocoltae, and more chocolate; along with a little oakiness; Very dark black with a small, glass-lacing tan head; Flavor of lots of chcolate, molasses, light oaky vanilla, and light hop bitterness.

At Vero. Deep black, with light tan head. Brilliant, jewel-like aromas with loads of coffee bean. Lovely palate. Rich roasted coffee with loads of complexity. Spices, star anise, vanilla.

22oz. Bottle: Complex aroma of burnt malts, cocoa, slight coffee, chocolate, slight vanilla, slight bourbon, light wood, and tobacco. Poured very dark brown in color with a small, light brown head that diminished but lasted throughout as a film on top of the beer. Clear. Not sparkling. Flavor is medium to heavily sweet. Tastes of roasted malts, slight vanilla, chocolate, light coffee, light bourbon, light wood, light caramel, slight tobacco, and a hint of piney hops. Medium to full body. Viscous, dry texture. Soft to average carbonation. Dark roasted malt, chocolate, light coffee, slight bourbon, slight vanilla finish is dry. 11%ABV is totally hidden.
