Intense aromas of coffee wafted up. Creamy smooth; full body. Drenched in sweetness (syrup, caramel, chocolate). Big, bold flavors and aromas of espresso and cream. Lesser notes (but still strong) of vanilla bean and dark chocolate. Mild bitterness fecklessly tried to keep up. Very tasty beer, albeit a bit too sweet for me. RERATE (bottle): Murky darkness. Rich and thick like a milkshake. Silky, too. Fruity alcohol and cocoa nose. Sour lactic intensity. Super-dark roast, tar, black licorice, bitter chocolate and espresso. Hoppy bitterness. Warming in the back of the throat. Great stuff. shadey (1500), Rochester, New York, USA

Pours an oily black with a quickly diminishing head of dark tan cream. Aroma is a well-blended mix of coffee, bourbon and chocolate. A very fine aroma for a fresh beer. Flavors are just as well blended, but there is a fresh hop and roasty bitterness. There is no hint of the massive alcohol on this smooth surface. aracauna (2391), Georgia, USA

Black as oil with a foamy brown head (even during small pours). An extremely rich and inviting aroma with coffee, chocolate and a touch of oak. Silky and smooth on the palate. Sweet but well balanced with bitter chocolate and hops. A real treat. Crit (2407), New Westminster, British Columbia, Canada

Aug 06/08: Just had this in a bottle and it doesn’t even taste like the same beer I had at brewpub. Very unrefined with harsh alcohol heat, not particularly pleasant. Would rate 4-5 points lower on overall beerbastard (98), Mesa, Arizona, USA

Coffee and bitter sweet chocolate. Would not have quessed the bourbon oak barrel part. Big flavor almost hides the alcohol. Silky smooth and full mouthfeel. Bitterness from the coffee? or from roasted malts. I like more hop in the flavor. This a damn good beer. This stacks up to any Imperial Stout. I can’t tell the difference.

| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Dec 1, 2009 (bottle - 22 oz) Dark black pour with a thin tan head. Aroma is incredibly roasted with a lot of coffee flavor and a strong bourbon note underneath the roast and chocolate. Flavor is very roasted with a ton of coffee and chocolate flavors. The bourbon comes through near the end and adds a nice sweetness to it. Incredibly deep and rich. I would say borders on an imperial stout. Really good. NobleSquirrel (1115), Chicago, Illinois, USA

Pours pretty near black with a tan head that disappears. Nose is chocolate, vanilla, Count Chocula, barrel notes and soft coffee. On taste it is pretty badass. A bit fizzy, somewhat fruity, but thick. Burly with big burnt notes, roasted coffee and supporting chocolate. As mcuh as Gonzo is an Imperial Porter, this one is more imperialer. Awesome beer.
