Commercial Description:
XX - 20th Anniversary, released 2008
XXI - 21st Anniversary, released 2009

This masterpiece is a tribute to Black Butte Porter, the revolutionary Deschutes Brewery beer that has excited beer enthusiasts since 1988. This special Reserve Series release is a colossal version of Black Butte Porter. Our brewers enhanced Black Butte XXI by adding some Theo’s Chocolate cocoa nibs from Seattle, dry-hopping it with 100 pounds of Bellatazza’s locally roasted coffee, and then aging a portion of it in Stranahan’s Colorado whiskey barrels. These regional partners provided quality artisan ingredients that give this commemorative beer a truly handcrafted complexity.
Released as Black Butte XX in 2008 to celebrate our 20th Anniversary.

as soon as i cracked the top on this one i could smell the roasted malt and chocolate already.i poured my anderson valley snifter to the halfway point and got a nice black body with a dark brown head.as the head rested it left nice webbing on the glass.the aroma blended up chocolate, roasted malts, pine hops, bourbon, and alcohol heat.the flavor is very complex.i pick up cocoa, bourbon, alcohol heat, chocolate, coffee, roasted malts, caramel, and a slight hint of vanilla.it pretty nice right now but a little young and hot.i bet 6 months will do it some good.(RE-RATE ON 10/23/08)alcohol heat has already faded a bit and things have ’’’’smoothed out’’’’this one is already getting really tasty.

On tap at the "Christmas in July" event at the Parkway Tavern in Tacoma, WA on 7/3. Served in 9 oz. schooners, the beer arrived with no head and left almost no lace. Aroma was loaded with caramel, coffee, and stone fruit (plum was my dominant impression.) This brew in no way resembles the mainstay Black Butte porter. It’s far sweeter, heavier, and stickier. Chocolate, coffee and plum/apricot sweetness dominate the tongue. The hops are nearly lost in this barrage. There wasn’t a lot of bourbon presence in this one, but just enough to make things interesting. I imagine this would cellar extremely well. Hope to find a bottle or two somewhere.

Tasted @ the Deschutes Brewery and Public House in Portland.
This one was very, very nice. Tried it at home too. One bottle left to keep for a while. Black colored brew. Bitterness all over the place. Liquorice, dark chocolate, coffee, spices. All in the aroma and flavor. Still it’s very smooth and balanced. Nice oak flavored too. Very nice one.

Bottle from Windy City. Pours with a deep color of brown and opaque black density. Formation of head is an explosion of thick topping of creamy foam. So rich and robust is the aroma because of all the scents of sweet dark chocolate and roast coffee. The flavor is initially sweet with a shock of tartness but can be simply ignored with the flavors of roast black coffee, light 2% milk, the chunks of chocolate, and the slightest reminder of bourbon. So glad i was finally able to come across a bottle since its not as common as the ordinary black butte.

Pours motor oil black with thick tan head. Aroma of chocolate and coffee. Taste is mostly chocolate and roasted malt. Thick mouthfeel. Very creamy. Bourbon was not noticeable.

GABF 2007. I got last pour... and thought they’d have more the next day... nope. This beer poured to a black body with a nice creamy light brown head. The aroma was hugely roasted. Licorice, coffee, chocolate, nice roast. The flavor was a superbly balanced mocha java and roasted black malts. Very complex and quite awesome. I hope they bottle this one.

22oz Bottle. I’ve now had both the 2008 and the 2009 releases. I know I’d rated the XX on here and the rating seems to have been toasted in the aliasing. Anyway...here’s my notes from the most recent XXI. Pours a blackish, smooth oily brown, with a nice coffeecream head. Aroma is soft, warming and roasty. Nice blends of coffee, booze, and some cocoa. Gentle and detailed. Flavor is equally rich and satisfying. I love the balance of the barrel in this beer, it’s really well-done, complementing the character of the beer with the bourbon. Rich chocolate, vanilla oak, and some raisins come out. Finishes on toasted brown bread. Delicious, drinkable, and very enjoyable. Thanks Laura and Darrell
