Commercial Description:
XX - 20th Anniversary, released 2008
XXI - 21st Anniversary, released 2009

This masterpiece is a tribute to Black Butte Porter, the revolutionary Deschutes Brewery beer that has excited beer enthusiasts since 1988. This special Reserve Series release is a colossal version of Black Butte Porter. Our brewers enhanced Black Butte XXI by adding some Theo’s Chocolate cocoa nibs from Seattle, dry-hopping it with 100 pounds of Bellatazza’s locally roasted coffee, and then aging a portion of it in Stranahan’s Colorado whiskey barrels. These regional partners provided quality artisan ingredients that give this commemorative beer a truly handcrafted complexity.
Released as Black Butte XX in 2008 to celebrate our 20th Anniversary.

(Bottle, Stockholm Beer Festival, 20 Sep 2008) Black colour with brief, beige head. Malty, roasted nose with notes of chocolate, coffee and liquorice. Malty, roasted taste with dark chocolate, cocoa, black coffee and dark rye bread. Full body, smooth mouthfeel. Fairly bitter with balanced sweetness. Stunning balance with alcohol very well hidden. Lovely beer!

On tap @ San Diego Brewing Company. Wow, what a great surprise this was. I haven’t had a beer that made me say "wow" in a while. Deep, rich dark color. Flavor is smooth, velvety porter goodness. Incredibly smooth. Barrel aging was there, but rather light. Would have liked to taste the bourbon a little more, but thats just me. Still, a stellar brew.

Sampled at Bockyhorsey’s Bocky Bash on 7-5-08. Pours a deep black with a ring of tan head that leaves a touch of lace. Aroma of chocolate, alcohol, coffee, and roasted caramel malt. Flavor incorporates all of the aromas as well as some dark fruit and nuttiness. Thick and creamy on the palate. A nice alcohol bite on the finish. Great beer.

Picked up a 22-oz bomber from Liquid Solutions. Pours an pitch dark brown, nearly black with a thin tan head that has some nice retention and lacing. Aroma is complex with scents of dark chocolate, coffee, some dark pitted fruits, black licorice, and some oak. Taste is thick, full bodied, with light carbonation with flavors of toasted dark malt, coffee, dark chocolate, some licorice and oak. Finish is thick texture, some alcohol metallic character with a decent toasted malt and chocolate aftertaste. One of the thickest beers to come out during the summer.

Bottle from Nugget in Vacaville, CA. Poured a dark brown almost black color. Smelled of coffee and chocolate. The chocolate flavor hits you first followed by the strong taste of coffee. The only negative aspect of this beer is that the flavor fell apart and the alcohol started to show as it warmed. Overall, very impressive.

Bottle courtesy Belgianbeergal. Thick oily black pour with a dark tan head.. Chocolate malt, vanilla, oak and hints of bourbon make up the aroma. Chocolate malt, vanilla, coffee, bourbon taste that is big and chewy, easy to savor. Very complex and makes you want to sit and sip to get all of the flavor and how they blend together. An awesome beer.

Bottled and on tap at O’Briens. Pours black with clear mahogany edges. Initial frothy brown head with low carbonation and microbubbles. Rich aroma of sweet molasses, cocoa, coffee and a slight hint of bourbon. The proportional use of barrel-aging has imparted a medium whiskey tone in the flavor, but not enough to really taste the oak. Tons more coffee in the flavor with smoke, cacao and a high dose of bittering hops that make for a long-lasting linger. Nuances of bourbon throughout make for a really pleasurable drink. Thick and chewy body. Tap version is much sweeter; rating is for bottle. Very nice!
