Commercial Description:
XX - 20th Anniversary, released 2008
XXI - 21st Anniversary, released 2009

This masterpiece is a tribute to Black Butte Porter, the revolutionary Deschutes Brewery beer that has excited beer enthusiasts since 1988. This special Reserve Series release is a colossal version of Black Butte Porter. Our brewers enhanced Black Butte XXI by adding some Theo’s Chocolate cocoa nibs from Seattle, dry-hopping it with 100 pounds of Bellatazza’s locally roasted coffee, and then aging a portion of it in Stranahan’s Colorado whiskey barrels. These regional partners provided quality artisan ingredients that give this commemorative beer a truly handcrafted complexity.
Released as Black Butte XX in 2008 to celebrate our 20th Anniversary.

XX Bottle sample at The Denver Rare Beer Tasting event during GABF week on 9/25/09. Amazing beer! pours a dark brown / black with very little head... (I suppose this would be different if pouring more)... near perfect mouthfeel... big body with lots of dark fruit, roasted malts, dark cherry, a touch of vanilla and coffee... finishes with big chocolate, nut, coffee and huge roasted malts... with a hint of spice, bourbon and licorice... truly outstanding.

Source:22 oz bottle at a tasting in Nashville.
Glass:Fullers snifter.
Appearance:Dark brown pour with a one finger brown head.
Aroma:Coffee and chocolate dominate the nose.
Flavor:Coffee and chocolate are prevalent with just a hint of licorice.
Palate:Full body with soft carbonation.
Overall:I know that this is heresy, but I like this more than the Abyss. Loved the heavy coffee.

Had on tap at Deschutes brewery in Portland. Pours Dark black color with small light brown head. Aroma and taste of dark chocolate, coffee, espresso. Coats the palate very well with great carbonation and great after taste. Caramel sweetness with a little oak present. This was really awesome. I enjoyed this! I took a bottle to go as well.

22 oz bottle. Smells and tastes spicy. I’m a big fan of Deschutes’ Black Butte Porter, but my already high expectations for this beer were exceeded after just two drinks. If Black Butte Porter is Bruce Banner, XXI is the Incredible Hulk, beefing up an already great beer to unparalleled heights.

Poured a dark brown, almost black with a small tan head. Nose was chocolate, vanilla, and strong coffee with a hint of bourbon. Taste was roasted coffee, chocoalte, oak, vanilla, and a bit of a burnt, smoky taste. The coffee lingers on the palette in a thick, foamy fashion. Great beer Deschutes!

Bottle: Poured a dark brown/black...nose had massive amounts of chocolate, vanilla, coffee, brown sugar as well as the oak/bourbon. In fact, I don’t think anything about this brew is subtle...the mouth feel is medium-full and lingers for a bit. The taste on this is just ridiculous...an explosion of vanilla-oak-bourbon hits immediately giving way to the chocolate and coffee. A very subtle hoppy finish is noted...though ass-bag-pidites would probably say I’m mistaking it for astringency. Whatever, it’s amazing.
