Commercial Description:
XX - 20th Anniversary, released 2008
XXI - 21st Anniversary, released 2009

This masterpiece is a tribute to Black Butte Porter, the revolutionary Deschutes Brewery beer that has excited beer enthusiasts since 1988. This special Reserve Series release is a colossal version of Black Butte Porter. Our brewers enhanced Black Butte XXI by adding some Theo’s Chocolate cocoa nibs from Seattle, dry-hopping it with 100 pounds of Bellatazza’s locally roasted coffee, and then aging a portion of it in Stranahan’s Colorado whiskey barrels. These regional partners provided quality artisan ingredients that give this commemorative beer a truly handcrafted complexity.
Released as Black Butte XX in 2008 to celebrate our 20th Anniversary.

Bottle, 11% at LCRBM08. Vinous aroma, sweet yeast. Black colour, very small brown head. Good flavour, bready, roasted, vanilla, vinous. Very good combination. The alcohol is a bit rough, but all in all very nice.

This is a pretty intense brew. Dark body with a tan head. Tons of dark chocolate, oak, coffee all in the nose. There’s even more coffee in the flavor. It’s got a very light bourbon character that really adds to the beer. Finishes quite bitter, and the alcohol is well hidden. Well rounded and full body. This beer is pretty nice.

Bomber. Whispy tan head makes a fractal starfish pattern across the top of my glass.Oak and leather, dried fruit and smoke. Deep rich back of the throat flavor and tingly tongue action. Much easier drink than a stout. Fresh and well balanced.

Bottle courtesy of scrizzz. Pours black with a very small ring of light tan head. Aroma of truffles, cherries, and chocolate torte with a cherry filling. Flavor is not as luscious as the aroma, lots of chocolate, raspberry, and rich roasted malt. Thankfully, no overt alcohol presence. The bourbon is quite mellow and I did not detect any in the flavor. Very nice, quite drinkable too. I really enjoyed this one. 9/4/8/4/16 (4.1/5)

Black Butte XXI bottle from Ledger’s in Berkeley. Black in color with a nice tan head. Aroma is roast, chocolate, barrel, and pepper. Flavor is roast, coffee, chocolate, earth, oak, and pepper. Medium-full and smooth on the palate. Great beer, better than standard Black Butte which is no slouch itself.

22 oz wax capped Bomber ($10 Bev Mo). Aroma of cherries, bitter almond and bourbon. Tastes of vanilla, caramel, sweet cherry and bourbon. Quite boozy with a nice bitter finish. This one should age well and will put hair on our chest. That’s why I keep it away from the wife.

This is a real good beer. Beautiful mahogany pour with a latte, thick head. Smoky aroma: maltiness, coffee and even some fruit. Cocoa, alcohol and hops. A great melaqnge of flavor comes together to form one of the best beers I have had from Oregon.
