Commercial Description:
XX - 20th Anniversary, released 2008
XXI - 21st Anniversary, released 2009

This masterpiece is a tribute to Black Butte Porter, the revolutionary Deschutes Brewery beer that has excited beer enthusiasts since 1988. This special Reserve Series release is a colossal version of Black Butte Porter. Our brewers enhanced Black Butte XXI by adding some Theo’s Chocolate cocoa nibs from Seattle, dry-hopping it with 100 pounds of Bellatazza’s locally roasted coffee, and then aging a portion of it in Stranahan’s Colorado whiskey barrels. These regional partners provided quality artisan ingredients that give this commemorative beer a truly handcrafted complexity.
Released as Black Butte XX in 2008 to celebrate our 20th Anniversary.

GABF 2007. I could sware this was labeled "Coffee Double Black" Nonetheless, this was an awesome brew. Excellent blend of espresso, chocolate, alcohol, vanilla, and cream. A thick mouthfeel. Very, very good and very, very strong.

wow, this was a lot better than i expected! smells fantastic and tastes even better! enticing black pour, an inviting bouquet of smoked prunes and burnt salty caramel. chocolate and coffee permeates all aspects of this brew. it is a tiny bit hot still, subtly revealing the high abv, but it is still quite suiting as it gives you the internal whiskey warmth on the way down. it says not to drink it for another 14 months, so i am going to age a few, i expect they will mellow nicely and become even more stellar! very nicely done beer!

22oz bottle from BevMo La Jolla. Pours black with a medium sized beige head that became a thin ring after a few seconds. Tons of cocoa dust, bitter chocolate, coffee, spice, and some dark fruits on the nose. Flavor was big and bold just like the nose. Alcohol was abundant but not over powering. Amazing mouth feel similar to that of Abyss but a little smoother.

Aroma is a deep, sweet roasted scent. Color is a solid black with a tight head and light carbonation. Taste is rich, sweet and tasted. Starting with a full body it goes down easy with a sweet bite at the end. Finish comes in sweet with a roasted malt taste and a little dried fruit then a bitter chocolate flavor. After taste is more of the same with a little alcohol showing. Wow this is an amazing brew, its extremely complex, rich and bold and soo tasty you just can’t stop drinking it

Bottle: Poured a dark brown/black...nose had massive amounts of chocolate, vanilla, coffee, brown sugar as well as the oak/bourbon. In fact, I don’t think anything about this brew is subtle...the mouth feel is medium-full and lingers for a bit. The taste on this is just ridiculous...an explosion of vanilla-oak-bourbon hits immediately giving way to the chocolate and coffee. A very subtle hoppy finish is noted...though ass-bag-pidites would probably say I’m mistaking it for astringency. Whatever, it’s amazing.
