Commercial Description:
XX - 20th Anniversary, released 2008
XXI - 21st Anniversary, released 2009

This masterpiece is a tribute to Black Butte Porter, the revolutionary Deschutes Brewery beer that has excited beer enthusiasts since 1988. This special Reserve Series release is a colossal version of Black Butte Porter. Our brewers enhanced Black Butte XXI by adding some Theo’s Chocolate cocoa nibs from Seattle, dry-hopping it with 100 pounds of Bellatazza’s locally roasted coffee, and then aging a portion of it in Stranahan’s Colorado whiskey barrels. These regional partners provided quality artisan ingredients that give this commemorative beer a truly handcrafted complexity.
Released as Black Butte XX in 2008 to celebrate our 20th Anniversary.

Bottle thanks to Flacoalto. Pours a deep amber brown with a small tan head. Aroma is medium sweet, smoky, roast, cocoa, malt and a weird musty basement smell. Flavor is smoky, alcohol, cocoa and light fruit. Finishes silky smooth with just a touch of alcohol. Medium-full body, smooth texture.

Bottle and served in my Expedition snifter: Deep brown with ruby highlight, soft creamy tan head left very good lace upon the glass. The aroma has notes of bourbon barrel (vanilla, oak, apricot, and booze) along with chocolate, roasted malt, walnut, and some espresso esters. The taste starts malty sweet and hints of dark fruits. Midsection displays some nutty notes along with chocolate. The finish is smoky (charred) and is where you can find the barrel influence more. The mouth feel is medium-bodied, not to hot but you do get the booze after awhile. All in all this is a solid STRONG / IMPERIAL/ ROBUST PORTER!

Draught at the 6th Boulder Strong Ale Festival. Pours opaque with a large, creamy, dark brown head, lasting with good lacing. Aroma is heavy malt (chocolate, coffee), average hops (perfume), average yeast (leather) with notes of prunes and tar. Full bodied, creamy texture, average carbonation, and a bitter finish. Average duration, heavy sweetness, light acidity and bitterness.

Black Butte XX bottle. Pours pitch black, capped with a medium sized frothy brown head. Aroma of ash, vanilla, burnt chocolate malt, prune, wood, and spice. Flavor is very charcoaly, with chocolate, vanilla, oak, prune and other dark fruits, coffee and some hops building towards the finish. Medium to full bodied. Solid beer, but the barrel treatment is a bit overdone.

highly carbonated dark black. smells like someone got drunk and rolled in chocolate syrup.chocolate, strong lingering intense roast coffee, hoo boy. warming alcohol presence. this one won’t sneak up on anyone. the coffee is dominating a bit too much for me at the moment, but still an enjoyable beer. 4 9 7 3 16

Bottle: The aroma consists of chocolate, caramel, roasted malt, and faint roasted coffee. It pours a dark brown, virtually black, with a small tan head. The flavor starts with lots of chocolate and caramel. The finish has some light-moderate roasted coffee, a hint of fruit, and some alcohol. Full bodied a slick mouthfeel.

22 oz. bottle, courtesy of golubj. Dark black pour with a thin, light brown head. Aroma of licorice and roasted malt. Very complex flavor. Initial chocolate hint gives way to roasted notes. Finish is slighty boozy and bitter. Tasty treat.

Rerate 9/7/08. This has smoothed out nicely and is not as sharp and alcoholic as previously tasted when younger. Bomber. Dark black with a small white head. Nose of chocolates, maltiness, burnt wood, and lots of alcohol. Not subtle. Taste is sticky and very alcoholic and hot. The chocolate is subdued after the strong nose. This needs to sit and calm down-it’s way too young and the rating should go up past 4 if it ages properly.
