Commercial Description:
XX - 20th Anniversary, released 2008
XXI - 21st Anniversary, released 2009

This masterpiece is a tribute to Black Butte Porter, the revolutionary Deschutes Brewery beer that has excited beer enthusiasts since 1988. This special Reserve Series release is a colossal version of Black Butte Porter. Our brewers enhanced Black Butte XXI by adding some Theo’s Chocolate cocoa nibs from Seattle, dry-hopping it with 100 pounds of Bellatazza’s locally roasted coffee, and then aging a portion of it in Stranahan’s Colorado whiskey barrels. These regional partners provided quality artisan ingredients that give this commemorative beer a truly handcrafted complexity.
Released as Black Butte XX in 2008 to celebrate our 20th Anniversary.

22oz bottle, 2008 vintage. thanks to kan for this! pours dark brown with tan head. espresso and chocolate aroma. same for the flavor but quite a bit of vanilla coming in as well. velvety body, 11% really? alcohol is well hidden. nice beer but devil over a barrel knocks this beer all over the place.

Bottle. Poured an opaque black color with a light brown head. Smelled of steeping barley, chocolate, roast, molasses, and alcohol. medium to full bodied with lowish carbonation. Semi-sweet with a creamy mouth feel and minimal alcohol warmth. Tasted predominantly of dark chocolate and cocoa powder. Delicious.

Bottle generously shared by a local who brought this to Track 84 in Warwick, R. Pours deep brown with a tan head. Nice aroma of dark roast, coffee grounds, and wood. Medium bodied with a slight creamy texture. Non aggressive flavors of dark unsweetened bakers chocolate, coffee beans, and dark roast. Mid palate has some vanilla right before the dry and slightly woody finish. Alcohol is well hidden. Good, but not as complex as Abyss. A tad heavy on the coffee.

Bottle: Pours a DARK black with a medium sized, slick tan head that disappears as quickly as it arrived. Aroma is of coffee, dark chocolate, wood with a touch of whisky. The flavor is dominated by malt, with a touch of bitterness and alcohol. However, the taste is a bit off with a funky astringent/medicinal layer. Palate is spot on..medium/heavy body, silky smooth and creamy. Just an outstanding mouthfeel. Overall this is a very interesting beer. It gets a decent score, but I probably won’t be rushing out to buy more.

yeah, I have to re-rate this one after trying it again. Nice pour with tall brown head, aroma of coffee, a little bit of bourbon, some roasted malts and maybe a touch of vanilla. Flavor is all over the place as well. Bourbon is definitely noticeable, but you also get the underlying porter flavors... Medium mouthfeel.... Better than I thought last year

Pours an opaque black with a medium tan head. Aroma is much brown sugar, roasted malt, cinnamon, some hops too. Flavor is packed full of malts, then comes coffee, a little smokiness, and the bourbon barrels are apparent as well. A sweet bourbon finish. Thick, rich mouthfeel. I like it. A little overpriced, but damn good. Overall, excellent.

Bottle from tyler. Dark black in color, decent head and good lacing. Strong aroma of chocolate and coffee. Taste is pretty much the same. Lots of coffee, roasted malt, chocolate all blended together. Good texture and carbonation level. I wouldnt of guessed it to be 11 percent, the alcohol was hiddent very well. Overall a tasty beer. Thanks tyler

[Bottle] Shared by Skyview. Aroma is bittersweet chocolate, coffee, and a touch of bourbon. Not an overpowering bourbon flavor. Nice and dry with a roasty coffee finish.
