Commercial Description:
XX - 20th Anniversary, released 2008
XXI - 21st Anniversary, released 2009

This masterpiece is a tribute to Black Butte Porter, the revolutionary Deschutes Brewery beer that has excited beer enthusiasts since 1988. This special Reserve Series release is a colossal version of Black Butte Porter. Our brewers enhanced Black Butte XXI by adding some Theo’s Chocolate cocoa nibs from Seattle, dry-hopping it with 100 pounds of Bellatazza’s locally roasted coffee, and then aging a portion of it in Stranahan’s Colorado whiskey barrels. These regional partners provided quality artisan ingredients that give this commemorative beer a truly handcrafted complexity.
Released as Black Butte XX in 2008 to celebrate our 20th Anniversary.

I got a bottle from santa and 5000...this beer is AWESOME! Pours a nice black color with a good tan head. Aroma is very sweet. Chocolate and coffee hit first, followed by bourbon, molasses and some nice roasted malt. Flavor is full of chocolate, coffee, anise, vanilla. Mouthfeel is perfect. Man what a great brew.

An pleasantly aromatic beer with a delectably smooth taste. A wonderfully tasting palate to die for. A god looking beer but with a thin head.

Lots and lots of coffee and chocolate in the nose with a bit of oak as well. Dark, dark black with a thick, dark tan head. Flavor is malt, coffee, chocolate and bourbon. Fantastic.

Growler sample from a traveling friend. Black pour with a huge tan head. Malty aroma with lots of chocolate and coffee. Vanilla and chocolate flavor up front giving way to coffee and a bit of oaky bourbon in the finish. The barrel-aging is well executed as are the coffee and cocoa nib additions. Sublime.

22 oz. bottle. Pours a dark black with a creamy tan head. Aroma of chocolate, vanilla, bourbon, and roasted malts. Flavor is very rich. Regular Black Butte is one of my favorite porters anywhere, and this version is absolutely incredible. This is probably the best bourbon barrel aged beer that I’ve had.

Poured obsidian black with almost no head, tasted of delicious chocolate with coffee after tones, and almost no alcohol. The bourbon aging smoothed it out quite a bit, an outstanding beer!

"a little harsh (maybe hops, maybe from the cocoa nibs?)...i’d prefer it be barrel aged/blended at 50% or more instead of 33%, but that is really nit-picking. This is an imperial porter squared. great big chewy flavors, nose, and complexity throughout. Don’t know if it’s worth the price more than a couple times, but i’m glad i tried it."
