Commercial Description:
XX - 20th Anniversary, released 2008
XXI - 21st Anniversary, released 2009

This masterpiece is a tribute to Black Butte Porter, the revolutionary Deschutes Brewery beer that has excited beer enthusiasts since 1988. This special Reserve Series release is a colossal version of Black Butte Porter. Our brewers enhanced Black Butte XXI by adding some Theo’s Chocolate cocoa nibs from Seattle, dry-hopping it with 100 pounds of Bellatazza’s locally roasted coffee, and then aging a portion of it in Stranahan’s Colorado whiskey barrels. These regional partners provided quality artisan ingredients that give this commemorative beer a truly handcrafted complexity.
Released as Black Butte XX in 2008 to celebrate our 20th Anniversary.

~Pours black with creamy brown head head. ~Strong scent of dark chocolate and mild coffee. Also a sweet fruitiness in the scent. ~Sweet coffee and chocolate flavor. Good balance of sweetness and bitterness. Alcohol definitely present, but not overpowering. ~Mouth feel is thick and creamy. Bitter alcohol finish ~This is a very good brew. Too bad this the last year to get it and I don’t have the means to cellar it. I bet it would be great with a year of aging. mmm

This was just lovely to drink. Pours a heady and oily black liquid into the glass with an ever growing voluptuous dark brown head. Licorice and graham cracker in the nose with some roasty vanilla beans and hints of smooth milk chocolate. There is so much going on here to enjoy. Cold coffee, perfectly roasted fresh coffee bean taste, smooth not quite creamy but just enough carbonation to make the mouthfeel very pleasant. Hints of vanilla and chocolate dance with caramel and nougot.

Popped the top on this one for my anniversary with my fiancee, and it was quite worth the occasion I must say. Pours liquid black with a small beige head that quickly dissappears. Aroma is quite a bit like an imperial stout...but theyre so closely related that is no fault. Lots of malt sweetness, some coffee, toffee, and bourbon notes. Taste is rather reminiscent of Stone RIS, except that the flavor is filled out a little more. The minute amount of bourbon, oak, and coffee taste really fill in the minor gap on my palate left by their amazing beer. This one was quite amazing and well worth whatever I paid for it. Wish I had bought two. And we made cupcakes with it!

Appearance: Pours a midnight brown with a frothy pinstripe and swirls at the top. Aroma: Coffee grinds, wet paint, cocoa nibs, licorice, and a bit of booze and spicy hops. Taste: Coffee, chocolate, bourbon notes with vanilla and caramel, some peaty malt notes as well as some spice warmth. Mouthfeel: Silky, velvety, rich. Overall: The best beer I have had by Deschutes to date, far better than Abyss. Most definitely a dessert/cigar bear. I think it would compliment a nice scoop of French Vanilla ice cream.

On tap at SD Brew Co. Pitch black color with very thick, dark tan head. Oh so dark. Lots of coffee and some chocolate in the aroma. Tastes of lots of coffee and some chocolate with lots of roasted malt. Very sweet but balanced by a deep hoppy bitterness. Can taste lots of alcohol, but not in an unpleasant manner. Very smooth on the palate, something quite enjoyable. Definitely more towards an imperial stout than a porter, due to the roasted and hoppy characteristics. EXCELLENT!! I will definitely get this again! It’s worth the $12 per bottle. ------ fresh and mild chocolate aroma. Huge chocolate and tons of coffee and roasted barley in the flavor. Also a little spicy, sort of like the Stone Porter w/ chipotle peppers. But goes down amazingly well. Extremely tasty but I think the tap version is better.

This is quite heavenly. Appearance is chocolate-chip brown with a tan head. 22 oz bomber. Aroma is light vanilla, light espresso, light chocolate, alchohol, and bourbon. Flavor is lightly sweet with espresso, light vanilla, bourbon, and alcohol. I might be tasting chocolate - it is hard to tell for me. Has a buttery feel in my mouth and alcohol is warming on the finish. It is a little creamy, but not overdone. I like this beer as a night cap.
