Commercial Description:
XX - 20th Anniversary, released 2008
XXI - 21st Anniversary, released 2009

This masterpiece is a tribute to Black Butte Porter, the revolutionary Deschutes Brewery beer that has excited beer enthusiasts since 1988. This special Reserve Series release is a colossal version of Black Butte Porter. Our brewers enhanced Black Butte XXI by adding some Theo’s Chocolate cocoa nibs from Seattle, dry-hopping it with 100 pounds of Bellatazza’s locally roasted coffee, and then aging a portion of it in Stranahan’s Colorado whiskey barrels. These regional partners provided quality artisan ingredients that give this commemorative beer a truly handcrafted complexity.
Released as Black Butte XX in 2008 to celebrate our 20th Anniversary.

22 oz. bottle - pours jet black with thin cream colored head around the edges; huge aromas of coffee, molasses, dark chocolate, but mainly big time coffee; just a killer nose; texture is slightly sticky and syrupy; drinks very smooth with no notice of alcohol; dry, roasty, creamy and chocolaty; a big beer all over, but very drinkable at the same time; flavor falls just short of the decadence 2007, but very, very nice; everything seems to be in equilibrium in terms of flavor, texture, aroma; bourbon smooths out the flavors and creates a rich, ozzy brew; my type of brew indeed

Vintage XX bottle. Pours out black with light head. Taste is rich and roasty. Flavors of chocolate, bourbon, caramel, coffee, wood and some hops. Smooth and balanced. Drinks like a stout. Good stuff.

This poured black in color with a moderate brown head of fine bubbles that fades away. When sniffing this immediately reminded me of toffee dipped in chocolate with nuts. This was followed by dark fruit, woodsmoke, mild bourbon, asparagus and a peppery spice. In the mouth it was medium to bull-bodied with concentrated flavor and a rich midpalate balanced by the carbonation. Overall, this has nice sweetness, dominated by toffee in both the nose and mouth, to it and good complexity. This appears as it it will age well for 6 - 12 months but beyond that the sweetness may overpower.

Thanks to Kegbear or this one. Pour ws thick engine oil with a lovely dark tan head. Aroma of alcohol, chocolate, and much sweet malt. Very full body with strong sweet malt, great roasted characters, and a light coffee bitterness at the finish. Very well blended but a bit thick for a porter. I would call this an imperial stout. Either way, great brew. Would love to age this guy for a couple years.

650 ml bottle from Bev4less. This rate for XX ver. Pours black with a tan head that quickly recedes to 1/4 inch. The aroma is moderate in strength with chocolate, plums, coffee, dust and licorice. The flavor is dark biter chocolate, black coffee, a bit of anise and some sweet whiskey. The mouthfeel is full and creamy. The finish is long with lingering dark biter chocolate . Overall: Worth every bit of the hype that it gets. This is a fine porter. Re-rate note: drank XXI, I find the nose to be more pronounced, and the flavor bolder. uping my score just a tad.

Bottle from Nugget in Vacaville?!? Kudos to Nugget for keeping a great beer selection, although I’ve never seen this one at any other Nugget market (Davis/Woodland Nugget?). Anyway, this one had the strong taste of coffee, almost like the Speedway stout except it didn’t hit that level on the flavor or palate. Still, what a great example of an aged IP. I might become a polygamist and marry a bourbon barrel.

Poured into a snifter. Total blackness with a nice creamy dark tan head. Pretty nice aroma with lots of vanilla, cocoa, and molasses emanating from underneath the black coffee and chocolate. Flavor is rich roasted gourmet coffee, a touch of red berries, raisins, boozy dark chocolate, and a long bitter finish with some tannic character along with the roast. Not astringent or charred. Perfect carbonation, hefty body. Very good beer.

Dark black pour, creamy tan head. Aroma of dark chocolate, bourbon, vanilla, and a little cherry. Awesome flavor. Roasted malt, vanilla, chocolate, dark fruit and a perfect touch of bourbon. The best bourbon barrel aged beer I’ve ever had. Thick creamy palate. Awesome beer.
