Very dark brown with a thin but lasting, sandy colored head. West coast hoppy, citrusy aroma with surprisingly little of the roasted aroma I was expecting given its color. The flavor betrayed the roasted barly that lent it it’s color. Still this is clearly an IPA that tasted fressh and zesty. The slight roasted flavors were just enough to lend a little interesting slant to it.

Sep 30, 2009 GABF 2009. Pours a deep brownish black with a light tan head. Aroma of citrusy hops and dark roasted malts. Medium bodied with average carbonation. Flavor of dark unsweetened chocolate and dark roasted malts, countered by a grapefruit zest bitterness. Semi dry hoppy finish. Not bad, but perhaps the roast is too heavy and is fighting with the hops. To me, a Black IPA should still have hops front and center with the malts in the background.

Sep 30, 2009 GABF 2009, day 1: This is quickly becoming one of my favorite “styles” of beer. And this was a shining example, almost as good as Stone’s 11th / Self Righteous. Rich, toasty, chocolatey, and grassy. Loved it.

Sep 14, 2009 Interesting contrast between dark charred flavors of the darker malt and the strong hop presence. I would have prefered it to be a little more savory than the burnt toast effect, but still an interesting offering - especially off set by the other 4 IPA in my sampler.

Sep 14, 2009 Half pint at the brewery - Aroma or roasted dark malts and woody pine hops. Flavor is hop forward. A big mix of flavors as advertised. After the hops move aside the roasted malt finish is almost smokey. Palate is creamy and tart. I like "dark" ipa’s and this was unique and tasty.

Aug 24, 2009 Tap @ NW Pub... Poured black with an off-white head. Very hoppy brew. A roasted malt presence but mostly succumbed to the strong hop presence. Citrusy and bitter finish.
