Sampled draught at Deschutes Public House, Bend
Brown mahogany color, rich nutty malt aroma with lots of hops. It has an average body but dies on the palate after the taste.

Bottle. Amber brown beer with a big beige head. Nice roasty-caramel malt aroma. Balanced caramel malt, butty, and slight chocolate flavor with some hops. Clean and refreshing and easy to drink.

Available in 22oz bottles. Pours a rich mahogany, very clear, with a tall fluffy off-white head. This was one of the more flavorful and full bodied browns I have had in a while. Nutty malt sweetness up front, nice toastiness to it, finishing with a smooth balanced end.

15-Dec-05 (22 oz bottle: $3.49 at Bottleworks in Seattle, WA) Since I also have a bottle of this beer, I thought it should get a more thorough rating, or at least be rated in a more "rating friendly" and controlled environment like my living room in front of my computer rather than a bar. This is definitely a mild brown ale, with very light roast in the flavor and nose. Mild sweetness, a fair amount of chocolate, and a bit o’ nuttiness in the flavor, and likewise in the nose, except that the beer does not have a very sweet aroma. Chocolate increases slightly as the beer warms up. Body is medium, with fairly mild carbonation. Light-medium brown, but with nearly perfect clarity. Light tan head pours to an inch in height, settling to a ring in a pretty normal fashion. True to the brewing style of Deschutes, this is an understated brown ale that has a nice flavor without trying to knock you over the head showing it.

07-Aug-05 (Draft: Deschutes Brewery in Bend, OR) Ooh, this smells nice! Malty, very chocolaty, lightly roasty, the nose has me looking forward to tasting this beer. It’s not as chocolaty, but the roast almost takes on a sesame character. It’s fairly sweet, but the roast helps to keep the palate pretty clean and dry. Moderately bitter, but not especially hoppy. Light brown in color, with a light tan head that shows solid retention and a dense crochetwork of lace. Definitely the best of the seasonals I’ve tried today. (7, 4, 7, 4, 14, total 3.6)

Nice to have friends that live in Portland and Seattle respectively, nice that they visit Phoenix on a regular basis, so they can bring these beers. Nice and malty, decent hop bite, not a favorite, but good none the less.

Bottle: Brownish dark copper, slight haze, lots of sediment (odd for a Deschutes brew), large foamy light beige head, fairly nice lacing.   Toasted malts, nutty, very faint dark chocolate or cocoa like bitterness.   Smooth nutty flavor, malty of the toasted kind, a hint of sweetness, with a very slight cocoa like bitterness at the finish.   Body and mouthfeel are light, but pleasing in this hot weather.   Not big nor robust, but very palatable and quite enjoyable.
