Floral hoppy aroma, with a touch of banana. Nice flavour, with toffee notes among the hoppiness. Lasting hop finish. Naven (876), Poway, California, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Jun 9, 2008 12 oz bottle. Nice dark amber color. No real aroma. Flavor is malt forward - i expected more hops. Well crafted, although I would have liked this to be a little hoppier. Taverner (861), San Ramon, California, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jul 14, 2008 Very good red. Full of nice bitter, refreshing hops. Body has some malt, but is still very dry. Pours red with foamy tannish head. drismyhero (815), Tacoma, Washington, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Mar 6, 2003 Hmmm...is it just me or does the term "cinder cone" lead the consumer to believe that the beer is chock full of malty alchohol warming goodness? Where's the smoldering embers? The flambe de beer? Sufficently douced in cooling hop water I gather. I think the hops do a little more than simply "balance the toffee sweetness" here. Very hoppy actually, the malt was very subdued - a bit hidden but kind of complex and definitely tasty. Deschutes adds another hop bomb to the Pacific Northwest amber market. cb (809), Wheat Ridge, Colorado, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Mar 14, 2005 Russet/golden filtered. Clotted, frothy head. Slightly salty and malty aroma. Subtle breadiness, mostly tangy and a little sharp. If I could some sum up this beer in two words, they would be: bittersweet toffee. drjay44 (802), Salida, Colorado, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Aug 23, 2009 12 oz. bottle. Pours a thin off white head of good duration, with minimal lacing over a clear amber (SRM 15) body....nose of hops (floral, spice) malts (cereal, honey, toffee).....taste is initially sweet with a combination of honey and toffee, then the hops arrive with spice leading to a bitter grapefruit lingering finish...mouth feel is medium, carbonation also. This is either a very "American Amber" or it is in the wrong category. The hop profile dominates the malt except very early in the nose and taste. It is very good, but it is a hop heads idea of Amber. ontario102 (794), Boise, Idaho, USA

| 2.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 11/20 | Apr 13, 2004 Frothy, foamy fenestrated head. Nutty, lightly malty and wan aroma. Aroma has some guava and apricot capped with molasses and brown sugar malts. A slight metallic character and pleasantly bracing bitterness. A nicely drinkable ale.
