Commercial Description:
First brewed in 2006, Deschutes Brewery’s Hop Henge Experimental IPA reappears this year with more extreme hop flavors than ever before. The new formulation is the epitome of the brewery’s experimental style and commitment to innovation, while gratifying their unquenchable thirst for beautifully balanced hoppy beers. The newest incarnation of Hop Henge uses several new hop processes and techniques to create a truly unique and unexpected beer. Several pounds of Centennial & Cascade hops are in each barrel with a heavy dry-hop presence to top it off. A blend of crystal, pale and caraston malts creates an overall biscuity characteristic that is dense and muscular, building the alcohol base to support the monstrous hop profile. 95 IBUs.

Pours a creystal clear copper color with a nice tan head. Aroma is fresh and hoppy with lots of fresh fruit like oranges and pears, along with a strong malt presence but not too much caramel. Flavor is slightly more bitter than expected and again fruity like the aroma. The malt backbone is perfect with great toasty characteristics. Palate is smooth and creamy and carbonation is nice.

Kind of a candied ginger/orange aroma. Body is incredibly well balanced - enough that the bitter finish is a very smooth transition. Orange in color, with a frothy head that diminishes while leaving quite a foamy remain on the glass. Sampled at Naja’s IPA fest.

Maybe it’s just because it’s a hot day, but everything about this beer seems to be perfect. The aroma is nice and fruity, with a hint of fresh grassy hops. The fruit is of the peach or cherry variety, with a bit of citrus in there as well. Very nice. Flavor is subtle for an IPA. Not so much of the astringent bitterness that I come to expect from this style. Just good fruity, citrusy flavor, with a little bit of hop bitterness lingering on the palate. Medium bodied, goes down nice and smooth. An absolute pleasure on this hot day, and perhaps the best IPA (imperial or otherwise) that I’ve had in a long time.

I’ve tried this both on tap and bottled recently. On tap was as part of a bunch of shot-glass sized samples, where I thought it was excellent... punchy, strong, extremely citrusy and biting/bracing. However, drinking a whole 22oz bottle was difficult. Not a very "drinkable" beer, but really great in small doses. My rating is for the first few swallows out of the bottle. Heh.

Batch 2 First sip mmm well Didn’t seem so experimental or hopish... Pours a darkish brownish amber orange. Nice head larger creamy bubbles at first, then they settle down to nice tiny tiny bubbles with a little lace with a thin ring around the edge... aroma some pine some floral.... second sip.... OK getting some bitters OK,,, now it’s hitting me... this is different than I’ve had before.. and the alcohol seems to be creeping up more than advertised! This is good, glad i got 2, wish i got more! some oily resin, around my tongue, nice.... ooo, nice burp, the sign of a good ipa, dipa! someone else said soapiness, yeah i can feel that... Deschutes moving up in my list! nice

bomber. Pours a clear, dark amber with a large, tan head. Nose is very powerful pine and floral hops. Taste is resinous pine hops with a little soapiness. Mouthfeel was oily and tingling from the hops with a big, bitter finish. Impressive.

Reviewed 4/16/2009 (Bottle): Pours a reddish brownish color body. Small white head, diminishing, clearish. Bitter dry hoppy aroma, pine and citrus. Extrmemely strong aroma. Nice taste, nott too bitter, some maltiness and nuttiness too. Some piney taste. Dry aftertaste. Pretty tasty, but too sweet an IPA for me.

Bottle. Pours a ruby amber body with a creamy off white head. Phenolic with a nice lemon, citrus and pine character. A moderate hint of alcohol and a hint of candy and malt. Chewy spicy pine y hope resins with a nice honey note to finish. The hop character is boarder line destructive as it aggressively lingers. A good brew but i’d prefer a sweeter citrus ipa.
