Commercial Description:
First brewed in 2006, Deschutes Brewery’s Hop Henge Experimental IPA reappears this year with more extreme hop flavors than ever before. The new formulation is the epitome of the brewery’s experimental style and commitment to innovation, while gratifying their unquenchable thirst for beautifully balanced hoppy beers. The newest incarnation of Hop Henge uses several new hop processes and techniques to create a truly unique and unexpected beer. Several pounds of Centennial & Cascade hops are in each barrel with a heavy dry-hop presence to top it off. A blend of crystal, pale and caraston malts creates an overall biscuity characteristic that is dense and muscular, building the alcohol base to support the monstrous hop profile. 95 IBUs.

60th rating of this brew, Bomber I got today at K&B. Pours deep orange with a tan head. Nose is full of pine and resin with a touch of citrus. Taste is pretty damn nice, a rich semi bitter grapefruit citrus with some resin and a touch of pine. This is a damn tasty and surprisingly smooth IPA for almost 9%.

Pours a varying reddish brown to an almost golden color with a prominent head. Aroma is of hops and grapefruit with a hint of something else just out of reach. Nicely bitter with notes of fruit and just a little malt. Fruitier than other IPAs I’ve had, which is interesting.

22 oz bottle. Clear amber with a puffed beige head that leaves lacy veils. Nose is orange, tangerine, brown sugar and a touch of pineapple. Medium to full body with a tang. Soft on the tongue. Taste is cantaloupe, juniper and orange peel growing bitter. Clean and dry finish like a good martini.

Pours very dark for an IPA - almost reddish orange - with a thick, dense head. Aroma makes it seem like this one offsets the hops more with ripe fruit than with malts. Bitter, herbal hops are certainly predominant. Funky flavor! Resiny, bitter hops are layered over caramel malts and a mild, dilute apple juice. Mouthfeel is great - just a bit of a bite, but nice and thick. Leave it to Deschutes to keep playing around with a good recipe - I’m not sure this is better than last year’s Hop Henge IIPA, but this is good stuff, for sure. Great given its non-imperial status.

Bottle from BevMo. One hell of an IPA. Dark amber color with a foamy cream colored head. Aroma is fresh hops and sweet malt. Flavor is more of the same, hops are piney and taste really fresh and crisp. Nice palate, fairly full for the style and a little sticky/syrupy.

Batch #2. The foam clings to the glass and covers the top of the beer. The hoppy flavor is complex and pleasant

Bottle from K&B. Amber/brownish in color. Strong hoppy aromas. Somewhat skunky. Good hoppiness, but seems to have a bit of a soapy flavor. Pretty tasty but not great.

Smells of great hops. Orange appearance w/a little haed that goes away. Great hop flavor w/the welcoming afterbite that sticks on the palate. Overall great IPA.
